Families of Stokes County, North CarolinaUpdated December 11, 2008 | The families represented in my genealogical project are those that are related to my family, even if they are very distantly related, I have added them in when I find them. I have followed my paternal (Bennett and Mabe) and maternal (Lankford and Carroll) lines and the kin found within those lines. This has become a major project which I have enjoyed doing. I have met many new "cousins" through this, some only in cyberspace and others in real life. This family history is an ongoing work in progress that is surely marked with mistakes and omissions. Trying to follow family lines and document every source is a daunting task. Unfortunately, at the beginning of my research, I did not keep up with or document my resources. I am trying to add any in as I review and add to my work. A family research project like this requires the help of many people. Just a few of those "helpful folks" are Glenda Bennett Duncan, Virginia Kolb, Jack Fowler, Clifford Sands, Jim Mabe, Audrey Mabe,Suzie Nuckols and the Heltons. Of course there are numerous other friends, relatives and acquaintances who have added to the overall content of this site. Without their help, I would not have nearly the amount of information that you will see here. I take full responsibility for any errors, so please contact me if you have any questions or if you feel I have erred in my information. The are many surnames to be found in this report. For a complete listing look at the surname index and click on any that are familiar to you. Even though there are manynames listed, the majority of the information is on the following families which at some point during their life time settled in Stokes County, NC. These families are: Bennett Goad Biggs Nelson Freeman Lovins Mabe/Mayabb/Maib Hylton/Helton Stephens Throckmorton Lankford Taylor Shelton Priddy Carroll Ziegler/Ziglar Zimmerman Neal Welch The Mabe family is traced to William Mabe from England, who came to the US as an indentured servant due to criminal charges. Somehow, he managed to turn it around and was given a land grant. He and many of his children moved to Stokes County, NC. Many of his descendants still live in the area. One of his grandsons married a Cherokee. Their family was quite prolific and populated the area. The Bennett family is traced to Benjamin Bennett who came to Stokes County from Virginia. (Some sources say he came from the Clinch Valley area, others feel he just passed through that area.) Following his lineage has been a thorn in my side, my brick wall. The information I have is the best I have been able to find. However, I still look for something that I feel verifies the information here or perhaps even proves it wrong. I hope to one day see his brick wall crumble to the ground. I still feel there is a strong Native American or other mixed heritage somewhere in the Bennett family. The Ziglar/Ziegler family goes back to Johann Ziegler of Germany and the Carrolls to Andrew Jackson Carroll. I never would have guessed how difficult it would be to find my Andrew Jackson Carroll! There are many of men from that era with the same name! The earliest Carroll ancestor I have went by Jackson and his son went by Andy. Andy was my great-great grandfather. I know they lived in the Bethania area of what is now Forsyth Co. and expect (hope) to find a Moravian connection with the Ziglars/Zimmermans/Carrolls at some point. I have made some headway with the Lankford lineage, however, it totally leaves the Lankford Surname and turns toward Shelton. I do not yet have enough of the Lankford family worked out. There were several different Lankfords in Stokes Co. at the same time and my feeling is they must have been related, even if distantly as they used some of the same given names over and over. I am not finished w |
