John Thomas Ashley (Jan. 20, 1837-Feb. 5, 1922) served in Company E,20th South Carolina Regiment, Confederate States of America. John Thomas Ashley lost his right arm on July 26, 1864, at the Battle of Seven Pines Deep Bottom. He was admitted to the Jackson Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, on July 28, 1864, and furloughed on Aug. 19, 1864. The Battle of Seven Pines was a few miles east of Richmond. He was a farmer in the Mt. Bethel community, about 1 1/2 miles south of the church. His home was restored by John Tom Ashley, a grandson, in 1979. John Thomas Ashley was appointed twice and elected twice as road commissioner in Martin Township
and he served in this capacity for 18 years. He married four times and had sixteen children.

Take a step back into time and see where a Confederate soldier lived upon his return from the war. You can find the John Thomas Ashley homeplace and see where he lived and even see the well that supplied water for the family over a hundred years ago. From Anderson, take Hwy. 28 to Hwy. 185. Take Hwy. 185 past Mt. Bethel Baptist Church. Turn right on Troy Murdock Road (State Road S-03-119). Go to the crossroads of Rube Ashley Road, and turn left. Go 3/5 mi. and the house will be on the left. Tip: Wear long pants & boots -- there are some rough briars around the home!
