Additional Biographical Information

Samuel Speer Harding, the son of William and Jane Elizabeth Speer Harding, enlisted at age 23 on August 31, 1861. He received a 7-day furlough in the fall of 1861. He was promoted to sergeant on April 12, 1862. On August 13, 1862, he re-enlisted for "2 years or the duration of the war." He was paid $17 per month.
After his death in the fighting at Reams' Station, VA, Samuel's father, William Harding, and Samuel's younger brother, Thomas Renny Harding (my great-grandfather) drove a team and wagon to Virginia and brought his body back to Yadkin County for burial in the Speer-Harding Family Cemetery near Yadkinville.

Samuel Speer Harding's brother, Greenberry Patterson Harding, and also my great-great-uncle, also served in Co. I, 28th Reg., NC Troops. Greenberry was wounded at Gaines' Mill, VA, Fredericksburg, and 3 times at Gettysburg, PA. He survived the war, however, and returned home to live to be 89 years old. He died December 27, 1931, and is buried at Farmington, Davie County, North Carolina.
