Additional Biographical Information

Enlisted in the Washington Grays, 15 April, 1861. (This company first assigned as Co. K, 10th Regt NC Artillery.) Elected Fifth (Orderly) Sergeant, Washington Grays, 18 April, 1961. Second in command of Advance Detachment which occupied U.S. Marine Hospital, Portsmouth (Outer Banks) NC May 1861. Assigned as acting Ordinance Sergeant of Confederate fort on Beacon Island. (When Washington Grays went to relief of Fort Hatteras, 28 August, 1861, Sergeant von Eberstein remained on Beacon Island, in charge of Ordinance, so was not captured when the Grays were compelled to surrender with other Confederate troops at Hatteras.) Attached to Georgia Regt in defense of Washington, NC, until that town was occupied by U.S. Troops, 21 March 1861. Attached to Office of Ordinance Officer, Tarboro, NC, 21 March 1862 to reorganization of Washington Grays in Tarboro, NC. Reorganized Washington Grays assigned to 10th NC Artillery, as Co. K., July 1862, Fort Fisher, NC. Transferred to 61st Regt NC Troops, August 1862. Participated in Defense of Charleston, SC September 1862. Severely wounded, Battery Wagner, SC August 1863. November 1863, Clingman's Brigade of which 61st NC was a part was ordered to Petersburg. Participated in the Defense of Petersburg, Va, until again severely wounded at Battle of Drewry's Bluff, 16 May, 1864. Furloughed home about 10 June, 1864. Returned to duty with Regiment 15 August, 1864. Honorably Discharged, Chapin Farm, near Richmond, Va on 15 October, 1864
