Family Tree How-To: About the Contributor Contact Information Service
Is
the service free?
Yes. You can obtain
at no charge the name and address of a contributor whose tree is
on a World Family Tree volume that you own or have subscribed to.
How
does the Contributor Contact Information Service work?
Simply fill
out a form to request the names and addresses of World Family Tree contributors.
Once we process your request, we will send you an e-mail message containing
the information.
Why
do I need to own or subscribe to a volume of the World Family Tree to
obtain this information?
This service is a courtesy
that we extend to our valued customers only. In addition, many of the contributors
have asked that they only be contacted by people who already have access
to their family tree.
Can
I get a phone number for the contributor?
No, we are not providing
phone numbers because most contributors indicated to us that they prefer
to be contacted by mail.
Why
don't you provide contributor names for all the trees in the World Family
Tree?
There are a two reasons
why we are not able to provide contributor information for a small number
of trees in the World Family Tree. First, while the majority of World Family
Tree contributor look forward to being contacted by possible distant relatives,
some participants do not wish to be contacted. Out of respect for their
wishes, we will not provide information about those contributors. Second,
a small number of trees in the World Family Tree were not contributed by
participants in the World Family Tree Project. These trees came from other
sources, such as previously published collections of family trees. We do
not have permission to publicize the contributor information for some of
these trees, although we do have permission to publish the trees.
Is
there a limit to the number of Contributor Contact Information Service
requests that I can make?
When the Contributor
Contact Information Service was first developed we did not know how widely
it would be used. To ensure contributors were protected from mass mailers,
we set limits on the number of requests that a customer can make and instituted
the "simple question" portion of the contribution. This is another way of
protecting contributor's addresses from uninvited use. Currently this limit
is set at 100 requests per customer. Our policies are developed to be appropriate
for most situations but there are always exceptions. If you have
questions about the Contributor Contact Information Service please feel
free to contact Technical Support.
What
if the contributor address is wrong?
We are trying hard to
keep these names and address current. Unfortunately, around 15 percent of
all Americans change their address each year, so it is difficult to keep
every single contributor address current. We encourage all our customers
and contributors to notify us of address changes.
As
a contributor, how can I remove my name from the Contributor Contact Information
Service or change my address?
