Reducing the Size of Your All-in-One Tree

The All-in-One Tree can be a large and very complex tree, depending on the size of your Family File. When you create a tree that represents the many complex interconnections between all of the individuals in your database, there may be some special cases that seem confusing at first glance. Suppose your tree is too big and you want to omit unrelated individuals to try and decrease its size. You can reduce the size of your tree by configuring the options for the All-in-One Tree and decreasing the number of generations.

Changing the All-in-One Tree Options

To change the All-in-One Tree options:
  1. From the View menu, select All-in-One Tree.

  2. From the Contents menu, select Options.

  1. Select the options you prefer, and then click OK to accept the changes and return to the tree.

The following is a brief description of the options you'll find in this dialog box.

Unconnected step-family trees

Select this option to display the relationships of people who are not blood relatives of the primary individual (but are related by marriage). For example, if your sister's husband has descendants from another marriage, then the descendants from his second marriage will also be included in the All-in-One tree. Deselect this option to omit these relationships and display a smaller tree.

Unrelated trees

Select this option to display trees that are not part of the primary individual's lineage. For example, if two or more people in the Family File are related to each other, but to no one else, then their tree is displayed. These unrelated trees appear at the left side of the tree. Deselect this option to omit unrelated individuals and display a smaller tree.

Solitary, unrelated individuals

Select this option to include individuals who are not related to anyone else in your Family File. When these solitary, unlinked individuals are displayed, they will appear in their own boxes at the bottom of the tree. Deselect this option to omit these individuals and display a smaller tree.

Display siblings in order shown on Family Page

Select this check box to display siblings from left-to-right, in the order they are listed on the Family Page. When unchecked, Family Tree Maker places them in the order that makes the best use of space (which usually results in a smaller tree).

Changing the Number of Generations

If your All-in-One Tree is still too large, you can try decreasing the number of generations. Suppose you want to create a tree that contains all individuals that fall within ten generations of the primary individual.

To decrease the number of generations:

  1. From the View menu, select All-in-One Tree.

  2. From the Contents menu, select # of Generations to Show. Family Tree Maker displays the # of Generations to Show dialog box.

  3. Click and remove the check mark from the Show all Generations check box.

  4. Specify the number of generations for both ancestors and descendants.

  5. Click OK to accept the changes and return to your tree.
