Online Button Does Not Do Anything At All

To create a home page or access the members-only sections of our Web site, you need to press the Online button in Family Tree Maker. Just starting your Web browser (such as Netscape or Internet Explorer) and entering in the address for our Web site won't work. Also, make sure you're using the same Web browser and computer you used when your first registered with us online. If you reinstalled the software, upgraded your browser or started using a different one, your settings were most likely lost. If no browser or the wrong browser starts when you attempt to go online, you can use the following steps to set up the browser of your choice (Netscape, Internet Explorer, or America Online).

Note: Family Tree Maker doesn't have a preference for any particular Internet Service Provider. All the program looks for, and works with, is your World Wide Web browser.

To set up your Web browser for use with Family Tree Maker:

  1. From the Internet menu, select Browser Setup.

  2. Click Continue to search your computer for compatible Web browsers.

Family Tree Maker displays a list of available Web browsers.

  3. If your browser is not highlighted in the window, click the button next to the name shown to display a list of available browsers.

  4. Highlight your browser, and then click Continue.

Note: If you're using Family Tree Maker version 6.0 and Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 5.0, select Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 (32-bit) from the list of available browsers. Family Tree Maker works with version 5.0, but it mistakenly refers to it as version 4.0 during the setup process.

Family Tree Maker displays a message confirming that your browser has been successfully configured .

  5. Click OK to return to Family Tree Maker.

Note: If Family Tree Maker fails to identify your Web browser, you can still set it up manually. Knowledge Base articles are available from the Online-Browser Issues section that provide step-by-step setup instructions for all of the Web browsers that are compatible with Family Tree Maker (America Online, Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc.).
