Cannot Activate Free Genealogy Library Subscription from CD using AOL 5.0

Some copies of Family Tree Maker version 7.0 and higher come with a CD that is used to activate your free subscription to Genealogy Library.

If you experience problems, such as getting an error message that this page cannot be displayed, when using the Genealogy Library CD to activate your free subscription to Genealogy Library and are using AOL 5.0, use the following steps to correct the problem.

Important: These steps require that a stand-alone version of Microsoft Internet Explorer, meaning one that was downloaded and installed from Microsoft's web site, is installed on your system. The reason for that is that the version of Internet Explorer that comes with AOL has been altered/customized which is the probable cause for the problem you are experiencing.

If you have the original Microsoft version of Internet Explorer 5.0 already installed, you can proceed to the steps below. If you don't have Internet Explorer 5.0 installed, you need to download it from the Microsoft web site before proceeding with the following steps:

  1. Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, and double click on Internet Options.
  2. Select the Programs Tab and click the Reset Web Settings button. This will make (temporarily) Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 the default browser in you computer
  3. Re-insert the GLC CD in the computer. The GLC Welcome! Page will appear and you can register to obtain your free subscription.
Once you have completed the registration you need to go back and make the AOL browser your default browser. To do so:
  1. Click the My AOL button in the AOL toolbar.
  2. Click Preferences.
  3. Click the Associations button, then click OK to the Confirmation dialog.
