Additional Biographical Information

Robert Alexander Montgomery (1845-1927), son of John and Nancy (Spencer) Montgomery joined Company G of the 103rd Pennsylvania Infantry with the rank of private at age 16 on January 10, 1862 at Kittaning, PA. According to his discharge certificate, he was born in Clarion County, PA, but family records state Canoe Ridge, PA in Indiana County, but I will use the certificate for now. His index card at the Pennsylvania State Archives as well as his discharge certificate have him being 5'7" with brown eyes, light complexion, and light hair. According to the index card, his residence was Indiana County and he was a farmer.

Robert would later be discharged on April 24, 1862 (date in question as again several different dates are given in his military service record, but this date is on the discharge certificate), however, many sources have no discharge date given and reasons for this are questionable. According to the discharge certificate, he suffered from "Chronic Bronchitis" and was therefore honorably discharged by reason of disability.

On September 18, 1865, Robert married Lavina McCullough and they had ten children. The family would eventually relocate to the Laurel, Nebraska area, where one son David Todd Montgomery (1876-1942) would marry Hattie Bissonette (1885-1977) on February 26, 1900, and have eight children. One son, Lloyd Arthur Montgomery (1909-1999), would later move to North Dakota and married Frances Ferguson (1919-1997) on April 6, 1935. Lloyd and Frances were the parents of Bernadene Ione Montgomery (1935- )and three other siblings (one whom died in childhood). Bernadene would marry Donald Iverson and together have five children. Their second daughter Vicky Iverson, would marry William Sauerwein, my father, on Nov. 13, 1982, and I would be born on Jan. 16, 1984. It is quite an honor to be descended from a Civil War veteran, and I am proud of my great-great-great grandfather Robert Alexander Montgomery Co. G, 103rd PA Inf.
