Additional Biographical Information
My great-great-grandfather, George W. Walts of Georgetown, Indiana, lost 3 sons, a son-in-law, a brother, and 2 brothers-in-law to the Civil War. These 7 soldiers were members of the 23rd, 53rd, and 81st Regiments of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Three were killed in battle and 4 died from disease. I have written a book which traces their life in the war. One soldier, James Henry Walts, spent his entire career with Gen.Sherman until he was killed in the Battle of Atlanta near the place and time of Gen. McPherson's death. The others died at Murfreesboro, Nashville, Chickamauga, near Vicksburg, and near Chattanooga. While I am not directly descended from any of them (five of them had no descendants) I am the closest living relative that most of these soldiers now have; 4 of them were named Walts. I have made it my mission that they shall not be forgotten. - Dennis S. Walts
