THE HANNEGAN FAMILY

I am researching the Hannegan family starting with Daniel Hannegan b circa 1785 in Ireland. Daniel married Catherine 'Kitty' Carroll b abt 1805 m ca 1820 in Ireland. Three of their children were born in Ireland, Thomas b ?, Margaret 'Cassie'abt 1825, and Nancy b 1826.

Sometime after Nancy's birth and her death in abt 1832, Daniel immigrated to Upper Canada with his wife and three children. They settled in Carleton County, Upper Canada where they stayed until sometime after July 1851, when they started the long trip down to Iowa.

While in Ontario they had eight more children. James Michael b Dec 10,1831; Nancy Anna b July 13, 1832; Mary Marie b Jan 15, 1835; Patrick b May 06, 1838; Daniel William b May 13, 1841; Catherine b July 10, 1843; Rosana b May 12, 1845; and John William b July 15, 1851. (I have a four year time spread between when they supposedly left Carleton County and their known arrival in Iowa in 1856 that I have not been able to account for.)

I do have a bill of sale showing Daniel purchasing 60 acres of Military Bounty Land from a Benjamin Benson dated Apr 18 1857. Signed by Jas.D Perkins, Register and Recorded by F.H. Pewett, Recorder.

They homesteaded in New Oregon, Howard County, IA. Daniel died in 1869. The 1870 New Oregon, Howard County census shows Catherine, age 66, living with her son, John, age 19 and a grandaughter, S.Evaline Logue, age 5. This census also shows a Dan Hannegan, age 29, with wife Margaret, age 21, daughter Della(Idella), age 4 and daughter, Lucy, age 2. Dan and Margaret's son, William Daniel was born on the 24th of June 1870, the same day as this census was taken.

It is known that Dan and Margaret left New Oregon when their new son was 8 weeks old. They left this district August 1870 moving into the Kansas plains around Cave Springs, Elk County, KS.

Dan's oldest brother, Thomas had a piece of property close by and was largely responsible for the care of Dan's young family after Dan's untimely death in about 1884. And I have a photocopy of a page 13 of a Abstract of Title Section showing John Hannegan, wife of Rose Ann recording a land patent June 30, 1879 and it appears to be the same land that Thomas Hannegan had a warranty deed on, Apr 28 1882 for $700. (Sec 13, Twp 29; Rg 11)

James Michael Hannegan also shows in a 1875 census taken by the agriculture board and was written in Dan's own handwriting as the census taker. How long these brothers were in this district is not known, but they did not stay.

THE STEELE FAMILY

I am also researching Silas Wesley Steele, son of John Steele and Elizabeth Lair of Ohio, but I have hit a real snag, as I cannot find anything Silas prior to his marriage to Susan Jeanette Edwards of Farmer City, IL(dau of Wellington Edwards and Sarah McFetters. My grandmother Eva Mae Steele was born in Farmer City, DeWitt, IL Aug 09,1884. I know that they were living around Retta, OT at the time of Dan and Mae's marriage in 1905. Silas and Susan Jeanette settled around Blackwell, Kay County, OT in the township of Retta.

Dan and Mae had 6 children: Glenn Wesley(my father), Dee William, Harry Steele, Velma Lucy; Marguerette Lillian; and Roger Eugene.Only Marguerette and Roger are still living.
