He had to invade their territory year after year before finally subdu ing them. The Saxons were pagans who amused themselves with burning chu rches and monastaries. Charles was a ruthless Christian. He was also concerned with illiterac y and was scornful of the bad grammar and unlettered tounges of some Ch urch officials. He urged monastaries and cathedrals to establish school s and make them open to everyone, the "sons of serfs and freemen, so th at they might come to sit on the same benches and study grammar, music, a nd arithmetic". He was so described: having a broad and strong body of u nusual height, but well-proportioned; for his height measured seven tim es his feet. (This is over six feet, in an age where the average height w as far less than that.) His skull was round, the eyes were lively and r ather large, the nose of more than average length, the hair gray but fu ll, the face friendly and cheerful. Seated or standing, he thus made a d ignified and stately impression even though he had a thick, short neck a nd a belly that protruded somewhat; but this was hidden by the good pro portions of the rest of his figure. He dressed simply in the manner of t he common people, wearing linen shirts and breeches under a tunic, in t he cold with a coat of otter and marten skins. He always carried a swor d. He strode with firm step and held himself like a man; he spoke with a h igher voice than one would have expected of someone of his build. He en joyed good health except for being repeatedly plagued by fevers four ye ars before his death. Toward the end he dragged one foot.3 He was also r ecognized by the Emperor Leo V as Emperor in the West in 814.32 In the a nnals for 814: "in hoc anno domnus Karolus cesar obiit in 5. Kalend. Fe bruar. in die sabbati."33 He styled himself in his documents as Imperat or Augustus Romanum gubernans Imperium (emperor Augustus governing the R oman empire) or serenissimus Augustus a Deo coronatus, magnus pacificus I mperator Romanorum gubernans Imperium (most serene Augustus crowned by G od, great peaceful emperor governing the empire of the Romans).32 He di ed on 28 January 814 in Aix-la-Chapelle (Aachen), Austrasia, Frankish E mpire, at age 67 years.3,4,34,20,35,33

BIOGRAPHY: King of the Franks (768-814) and Holy Roman Emperor (800-14) . The elder son of the Frankish king Pepin III the Short, he ruled the F rankish kingdomjointly with his brother Carloman until the latter's dea th in 771. He then became sole king of the Franks, and began a series o f campaigns to conquer and Christianize neighboring kingdoms, defeating a nd becoming king of the Lombards in NItaly (774). His expedition agains t the Moors in Spain failed (778), but he successfully annexed Bavaria ( 788). Charlemagne fought against the Saxons for many years, finally def eating and Christianizing them in 804. He subdued the Avarsof the Danub e and gained control of many of the Slav states. With the exception of t he British Isles, S Italy, and part of Spain, he united in one vast sta tealmost all the Christian lands of Western Europe. His coronation as e mperor atRome on Christmas Day, 800, after restoring Leo III to the pap acy, marks the inception of the Holy Roman Empire. He established his c apital at Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle), where he built a magnificent palace a nd invited many scholars and poets; he codified the laws and promoted a c ultural revival known as the Carolingian renaissance. BIOGRAPHY: 774 - Reacting to the Pope's pleafor help, Charlemagne conqu ered the lands of his brief father-in-law after a lengthy siege of Pavi a. Charlemagne spent the following Easter in Rome and reaffirmed his vo w to protect Papal lands.
BIOGRAPHY: 775 - Charlemagne beginsnewattacks against the Saxons and th eir leader Widukind.
BIOGRAPHY: 778 -The events surrounding the Song of Roland take place as C harlemagne's rear guard leaves Spain in Gascon territory. Though somewh at romanticized in the 4000 line epic, the defeat of Roland is the most i mportant epic literature to come from the Middle Ages.
BIOGRAPHY: 782 - In response to Widukind's attacks, Charlemagne orders t he execution of 4500 Saxon prisoners in one day.
BIOGRAPHY: 783 -On April 30, Hildegarde dies in childbirth, and Charlem agne's mother Bertrada dies three months later. Charles also begins the f inal three year campaignto conquer Saxony. The Saxons are finally crush ed, and Charlemagne imposes strict new rules to govern all areas of the ir lives, laws that only the Christian Churchin Saxony could remove.
