David - We have access to most Colorado federal censuses and the 1885 Colorado census at local libraries. As far as resources for our research go, there are numerous books in the local libraries. During the summer, we research at the County Clerk's office which has an amazing wealth of information, such as pupil census records, wills, divorces, records of county poor, etc. We may squeeze in some county clerk research later this year. We will be putting a complete list of all marriages in Rio Grande County this winter. Also, we will put up some old directories and cemetery transcriptions. Any other suggestions? We haven't decided what we will put up from the Rio Grande clerk's office yet. Of course, will continue posting extractions of marriages, divorces, births, and deaths from old local newspapers. Sound intimidating? It does to me! Ha! Here's the obit for Mrs. Edward S. Abernathy from the September 11, 1920 issue of the Monte Vista Journal: "The death of Mrs E.S. Abernathy Sunday morning caused a wave of deep public sympathy for the bereaved husband and four little children. The oldest child is nine years of age and the youngest a baby of twenty-one months. Mrs. Abernathy was a true conscientious mother to her children and her life was devoted to their care and nurture. Her untimely demise is a terrible blow to her devoted husband and a tragedy to the dependent little ones. The obituary follows: Bessie May Murray was born near Arkansas City, Kans., Dec. 29, 1886 and died at her home in Monte Vista, Sunday, Sept. 5, 1920, after a short illness from uremic poisoning. In 1898 deceased came to Colorado with her parents and settled at Hooper. The family then moved to new Mexico. Deceased was married to Edward S. Abernathy in Del Norte in 1910, and from this union four children were born, two boys and two girls, aged nine, six, four and twenty-one months, all of whom survive. Her surviving relatives are father, John M. Murray of California; brother Walter, of Holton, Oregon; sister, Mrs. Lizzie Winner, Los Angeles; sister, Martha Welch, Nebraska; sister, Jessie Adams, Oklahoma; Nellie Amick, Chama; Bertha Hoben, Dulce, N.M.; Mrs. Frank Egan, of Monte Vista. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Christian Church, conducted by Rev. Elsea. The pall bearers were from the local Woodman circle, of which order Mrs. Abernathy was a member. Interment at Monte Vista Cemetery." We haven't made a copy of Edward's obit yet. We'll send that to you next week via email. Take care ... - dan and linda - __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Photos - 35mm Quality Prints, Now Get 15 Free! http://photos.yahoo.com/
