Herbert Vincent Ackerman (b. Abt. 1877, d. Abt. 1951)

Herbert Vincent Ackerman (son of John H. Ackerman and Mary Ida Brower)^{21, 22} was born Abt. 1877 in Acquackanonk Twp., Passaic Co., NJ²², and died Abt. 1951 in Washington Twp., Morris Co. NJ²². He married Mary Hunkele on 17 Oct 1900 in St. Boniface R.C. Church, Paterson, NJ²², daughter of Adolph Charles Hunkele and Catharine Vollmer.

The 1880 census lists Ackerman, Herbert V., age 1, living (along with his parents) with his Grandfather, George Brower in Acquackanonk Township, Passaic Co., NJ.

He and Mary Hunkele were married in 1900 in St. Boniface Church Rectory (The "German Church") with Mary's sister Sybilla Hunkele and Martin Holmes as witnesses. In the 1920's he rented a farm on Valley Road. The barn was along the road about where St. Phillips R.C. Church stands, and the house across the road from it. In 1939 (which is the first that I can remember) he had a farm on Van Houten Ave., next to the Acquackanonk Grange Hall. He raised hogs and tomatoes, which he sold at the Paterson Farmer's Market and to several grocery stores in Paterson. He also maintained a roadside stand in front of the house where he sold tomatoes by the basket. In 1940 he moved to a farm on Union Valley Road, West Milford Township, Passaic County. This was a dairy farm. The farm was situated across from Pinecliff Lake. which had a large summer population. In the summer HVA delivered raw (unpasteurized) milk to many houses. Mary would make butter and cottage cheese which were also sold. In 1946 he moved to the farm which his son John H. left when he moved to Paterson in 1942 to work in a "Defense Plant".
