  Notes for ESTHER KATHERINE BREHM:
This is from a story Rose Branchini gave to Jim Schlueter and he shared with me on December 17, 1998 via the Internet.

Aunt Esther and Uncle John were my favorites. They both worked at Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids. He was almost 20 years older than her. She was married and divorced pretty young (as was her sister Edith...pretty racy for those days...don't you think). Esther was unable to have children, but they really loved kids. The whole family gathered at their house on Saturday night for supper and wrestling, but that's another story. Their last name was pronounced "yule," as he would remind anyone he met. He loved all the girls, always a hug and a kiss, he'd probably be arrested these days! Ha! Anyway, picture this...
In 1955, we were living in Washington, Iowa. My brother was born in May with serious complications. He was thought to be dead at birth, but a nurse who was removing the dead infant discovered him to be alive. The doctor had discarded h im, trying to save Mom who was hemorrhaging massively. Both were hospitalized for some time...expenses. Dad was a butcher and got pneumonia later that year...always in the summer. He was in the hospital too...expenses. All four of us kids got chicken pox. We moved to Washington, which is south of Iowa City. When Christmas rolled around they had four kids and no money. Dad brought home a tree (Charlie Brown) that was left over from the grocery store, but Santa was not going to make it. Aunt Esther, who would have been in her early 50s and Uncle John in his late 60s maybe, would not let those four kids go without anything for Christmas. They drove from Cedar Rapids in a snow storm (about 70 miles one way and back home again). No small feat in those days, just to bring us each a gift. I think mom and dad got a ham...each girl got a doll and baby Dave got a toy car. That is all we got that year. I was four years old and, you know, I still have the head to that doll. It fell apart when I was seven, and I kept it anyway. It's just a battered old doll head, but someday I would like to get it restored if I can find someplace to do it. Actually, that is one of the few toys I ever had...very special. So, in my opinion those two people were just saints.

43. viii.   WALTER CONRAD BREHM, b. June 13, 1904, Newhall, Iowa; d. March 3, 1993, Vinton, Iowa.
44. ix.   MILDRED KATHERINE BREHM, b. February 13, 1908.

10. LOUISE CHARLOTTE3 BREHM (JUSTUS2, ANTON1) was born March 8, 1866, and died October 14, 1929 in Pukwana, South Dakota. She married (1) EDWARD A. SCHLUETER December 23, 1902. He was born July 17, 1860, and died September 13, 1912. She married (2) W. A. COOPER March 18, 1914.

Notes for W

[Letter from Charlotte Schlueter Hansen - June 1993]\\

Only thing I ever heard about Grandma's second husband. Everyone in the family called him "Old Man Cooper." According to the marriage license they listed her as 43 years old. You take her birthdate and wedding date and it adds up to 48 years???
This little tale was told me by Jim Rodgers. He was born and raised in Kimball, and he said Cooper made "Moonshine" during Prohibition. The Feds were in Kimball to look him up. Friends got word to him and he dumped all the "mash" down the alley. The neighbors' chickens ate the evidence. He said chilckens were falling off fences, etc. in a drunken stupor. A funny sight to behold. Guess Grandma washed dishes in the hotel there to help with income. I do know that none of the children approved of him. I never heard a good thing about him. I know my folks cared for her when she got sick. She was buried as Cooper but is next to Grandpa in Kimball Cemetery. There she is under the Schlueter name. I was two years old when she died. Dad, Alydia, and Dorothea paid for her burial. No record on W. A. Cooper.

Notes for BERTHA ALYDIA "LYDIA" SCHLUETER:
[Letter from Charlotte Schlueter Hansen - June 1993]\\
Aunt Lydia and Uncle Hershel lived in Chamberlain. She nursed him for nine long months in 1933 when he nearly died from typhoid fever. I can't remember the year they built the motel (Melchor Cabins), but Aunt Lydia was a hard worker and really made a go of it. I remember Dad calling her "Mrs. Roosevelt." She was always going on trips. I lived with them my last two years of high school as I needed certain subjects in order to get into nurses' training. So Dad paid my tuition and I helped at the motel after school hours. They treated me great. Aunt Lydia died so young. She had kidney failure and went to Rochester for surgery. She died the day after she got there and never had the surgery. Hershel was a lawyer.

  vii.   DOROTHEA HULDA SCHLUETER, b. August 2, 1906; m. (1) MURRIN E. YOUNG; b. April 28, 1903; d. February 3, 1965; m. (2) CARL F. LARSON, January 17, 1927; b. November 3, 1884; d. July 29, 1948.
  Notes for DOROTHEA HULDA SCHLUETER:
[Letter from Charlotte Schlueter Hansen - June 1993]\\
Then there was our dear Aunt "Dorsey." She married Uncle Carl the year I was born! He was twenty-two years older than she was. Aunt Dorothea ran the telephone office in Pukwana. Uncle Carl maintained the phone office until he retired. I worked for her as relief operator for two years before going to Chamberlain for my last two years of high school. She also worked in J. C. Penney. I don't know what year she married Uncle Murrin. They bought a motel in Nevada, Missouri Pleasant Inn Motel. She lost Murrin from lung cancer. He was a railroad man. I was with her in Missouri when we lost my dad. The doctor wanted her to get out of business because of her heart. She was in the process of selling the motel and was coming here to live in Yankton when she died.\\
As you can see, we were a closely knit family. I dearly loved my aunts and uncles and spent many happy hours with them all. .

11. ANNA ELIZABETH3 BREHM (JUSTUS2, ANTON1) was born July 19, 1869, and died January 5, 1934. She married LEWIS SCHLOTFELT November 4, 1891 in Vinton, IA - Benton County. EWIS SCHLOTFELT:
The Century Farm (now owned by Luella Schlotfelt) is the original Schlotfelt home in the north half of the south half of the northeast quarter of Section 21, Township 86, Range 11, west of the 5th parallel, in Cedar Township. This 120 acres was purchased from John and Levina Payne in November 1866 for $720 by Clause Christian and Margaret Freese Schlotfelt, formerly from Hamburg, Germany. They moved from New York to Moline, Illinois, then to Benton County, Iowa.\\
By covered wagon, the family came to Cedar Township. Grandpa Clause tooke the covered upper part off the wagon and left it for Grandma and the children for shelter. He and a neighbor drove 30 miles to Waterloo for lumber to build the small home and a lean-to shelter for the animals.
Clause, having been a carpenter by trade in Germany, built the present eight-room house in 1874, as well as most of the other buildings on the farm. A large horse barn stalling 16 horses was built by hired carpenters. Later, modern sheds and garages were added by son Lewis and his wife, Anna, who bought the land upon the death of the parents.
Lewis and Anna were active in all the community activities. Lewis served on the schoolboard and was elected Township Trustee for many years. Their goals were to have their children obtain a college education after high school. They saw four earn degrees and teach, one an advance degree in Medical Allied Sciences. One became a State Conservation Officer.
After Lewis and Anna died, Chester and Margaret Schlotfelt bought the place and maintained it with pride on much the original plan.\\
