Letter to update the Stegman book - 1995:
Jerome stopped being caretaker of Saint Charles and started working for a rancher in 1980. He always enjoyed working with cattle and farming.
In July of 1982, he again planned a reunion. Mary Ann and Carl Smelker hosted the reunion at their shop in Colorado Springs. Most of the aunts and uncles were there and a lot of cousins. It was a great sucess!!!
In December of 1981, Jerome had surgery but he was determined to be back at work soon. Jerome would take walks to gain back his strength, his constant companion was his dog. In November of 1982, he had surgery again which left him very weak - but he was still determined to go back to work. During the times he was going to sports events, he also took time to help Rita pick out her wedding gown and veil and was looking forward to wearing his first tuxedo.
In the middle of March, Jerome was admitted to Burlington hospital and was later transferred to Denver. He passed away on March 26, 1983. His children were all present to bid him farewell. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
I continued driving the school bus and worked as a aide for the Stratton school helping with preschool and first grade. I later transferred to the high school as a library aide.
On November 30, 1991, I married Sidney Hubbard. He was transportation supervisor for the Stratton Schools for 20 years. Both Sid and I retired in June of 1992. We now enjoy traveling, sport events, toy show, and just taking life easy.
