Generation No. 1

1. JOHANN GEORG1 HOPFENSACK was born 6-24-1813 in Udestedt, Weimar. He met SUSANNE DOROTHEA STEINACKER 9-11-1837 in Udestedt. Weimar. She was born 3-17-1812 in Udestedt, Weimar.

Notes for J
OHANN GEORG HOPFENSACK:
Johann George Hopfensack emigrated to the United States at the age of thirty eight with his wife and six children. He listed his occupation on the passenger list as gardener. Local records also show his occupation at "chicken-dealer"

He appeared as George "Hoppensack" (age 58) on the census of 1870 in the 5th District, 10th Ward of New York City, New York Co., New York. He was listed a "paper carrier" and his personal property was valued at $500. Living with him was his wife "Susan" and their youngest daughter, Rose. And living nearby was their son Theodore.

George appeared a second time on the census of 1870. He was 59 years of age, a news carrier, and born in "Saxonia". Living with him were four others: his wife "Susana", sons "Ernest" and Theodore, and daughter Rosa.

He appeared as "Hopfensak" (age 67) on the census of 1880 in New York City, at 72 First Street, New York Co., New York. He was listed as a "news dealer". Living with them was their son Theodore.

The following is an e-mail from Carol Maguire (cat-m@msn.com) who has written to the Udestedt church to determine if Johann Christian Willhelm August HOPFENSACK is the father of our Johann Georg (b. 24 June 1813). Check again in November 2005.

Needless to say, I will be anxious to hear the results which, I hope, will add additional earlier generations to the Hopfensack family tree.
I found the following information in German on the Internet, but Richard, who is helping me translated this:
Johann Christian Wilhelm August HOPFENSACK
Protestant composer of church songs (presumably hymns)

b. 1 Oct 1801 as pastor’s son, Schloßvippach, Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach

d. 6 Mar 1874, Kleve (Lower Rhein); studied at the Gymnasium in Erfurt, where his father worked as a deacon and professor

Richard's additional comments to me were:

Udestedt and Schloßvippach are small villages just about four miles from each other, and roughly ten miles NE of downtown Erfurt (i.e., the old part of the city). I can’t find the name Hopfensack in the phone book for that area, so I’m guessing that the name was not common, and that these Hopfensacks could then all be related. If they are descendants of a pastor, that may explain the rarity of the name, as pastors were often assigned to churches outside of their regions of birth, so the name may have come from a different region a generation or few earlier. Of course, there are a few assumptions in there that remain to be proven.
