RANZ ALOIS ACKERMANN:
[Paul Ackerman.FTW]

Franz was born of 17 December 1831 in Kirchhausen, near Heilbronn, Wuertemberg. On June 7, 1853, Franz Alois Ackermann and his brother, Johann(es) arrived in New York from Wuertemberg in southern Germany, aboard the sailing ship "Havre" a 870 ton, three masted schooner which sailed from L'Havre, France. Franz was 21 years old and his brother 18 years old. Both brothers came to settle in Ottawa, Illinois, and Franz married Christina Krieger, who was born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. (The marriage license shows "Frank Ackerman" suggesting that he changed his first name and dropped an "n" from his last name on or before that time)

Between 1864 and 1881, Franz and Christina had 10 children, 2 of whom died at birth. They lived in a small, wood-frame house complete with an outhouse and woodshed at 1001 West Madison Street in Ottawa. Ottawa records show that Franz bought the residence with a fellow named Anton Bek in 1864 (two years after Gus, their oldest child, was born) for $ 385, free and clear.

Franz younger brother, Augustus(could have been Johannes Augustus), lived nearby in Ottawa with his French wife, Felicia, and their three children: Virginia, Freddie and Felicia. Brother Gus was a shoemaker by trade.

Franz, on the other hand, was a tailor and used to sit cross legged on the floor with a small ironing board before him to press the tailored clothes. He had a fine voice and developed a chorus of some 50 men, who gave public performances on the steps of the Congregational church in Ottawa. Franz died on March 4, 1887, when his youngest child was 6 years old, of a hemorrhaging from a cancerous leg tumor rumored to have been caused by repeated bumping with his heavy iron as he pressed clothes. He was 54 years old.

His obituary read: Frank Ackerman was a well-known tailor long employed by Wm Trabing's in Ottawa. He died in ChiCago where he had gone to be healed of a tumerous cancer, which had affected him since 1884. He left an insurance policy for $ 2,000 to his wife.

Note: His death certificate shows his age as 54 years, 2 months and 14 days which confirms his birth year as 1832 not withstanding some LDS documents which show 1831. His tombstone reads 1832 - 1887

HRISTINA KRIEGER:
[Paul Ackerman.FTW]

Christina was born in 1839 in Allendorf an der Lumda, Konigsamt Giessen, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. According to family records, she was the second daughter and sixth child of Ludwig Krieger and Elisabeth Kaspar. She met and married Franz Ackerman after both had immigrated to the United States. The marriage took place on her 22nd birthday in the Zion Lutheran Church in Ottawa, Illinois.

Following the death of her husband, Christina raised her eight surviving children in the house on Madison Street in Ottawa and the 1870 census confirms recollections that Christina took care of her mother, Elizabeth Krieger from Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, who was bed-ridden on the second-floor of the home - at a time when Christina's children were still grade school age. Elizabeth died in 1891 at the age of eighty-six.

Christina is remembered as always smiling, always cheerful. Ottawa records show that only two months after Franz died, Christina purchased two properties (for $ 200) and two years later sold one of them for the same price. Her oldest daughter, Lena, and her youngest son, Frank, continued to live with Christina until her death on February 9, 1918. She was 78 years old.
