Notes for Elijah Walker:
Elijah is the oldest son of John Walker, Sr.He is named after his grandfather who is found in the 1820 Hickman County, Tennessee census.
Elijah married Lucy Ann Elizabeth George. This marriage brought the Walkers and the Georges of Yell County together in a union that would produce a prolific number of children in the following generations. These generations would establish the churches, cemeteries, and schools in the communities of Centerville and Mt. George in Yell County, Arkansas.
The George family belonged to the Church of Christ. The Walker family belonged to the Missionary Baptist Church. How did they ever do it?
Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church was organized in July 1876.After divine services by Elder DeArmon, the church organized by calling Elder J. W. Pendergrass as Moderator and Bro. A. B. Tharp, Clerk Protem, and calling for letters, whereupon the following brothers and sisters came forward and presented their letters of dismissal from the severl churches to which they belonged:from Zion Hill Church, Yell County came Jessie Pendergrass, J. M. Miller, Jane Pendergrass, W. D. Ross, James Sloan, M. A. Burton, Lucretia Taylor and Emma A. Tharp. From Mountain Springs, Yell County came M. D. and M. E. Harley.W. R. Payne came from Temperance Hill, Masshale, Mississippi.
Letters were read and approved, read the Church Covenant, Articles of Faith and Rules of Decorum which were unanimously adopted.(This taken from the original church record).
The church elected Elder J. W. Pendergrass as pastor and W. R. Payne as church clerk.
The original church building was located approximately two miles south of Hwy. 154, on the east side of the county road that runs through Mt. Tabor Community connecting Hwy. 154 and Hwy. 7 near Petit Jean River Bridge.
The first church building burned in the late 1920's.Only a few pews were saved from the burning building. The church members then began meeting in the Potts School House, which was located approximately one mile southeast of the church property. The Potts School District was consolidated with the Ola School District in the early 1930's.The church continued to meet in the school building which became known as the Mt. Tabor Church House and was later deeded to the church.
During World War II many people left the Mt. Tabor community.Small farms were sold collectively to one owner.Thirty years later there were too few to continue meeting in church services. They began driving out of the community for church services.Today, the Mt. Tabor church building stands alone in a community stripped of it's once thriving small farms as a monument of the many Christians who spent many years worshipping there.
