Mrs. Ella W. Brainerd nee Ella Owsley, for nearly 3/4th of a century a prominent resident of Lincoln, Illinois; for 20 years president of the Illinois Presbyterial Foreign Mission Board; noted for her religious and philanthropic deeds; with husband, Ben H. Brainerd, settled in Lincoln on a 320 acre farm at the edge of the city on North Union Street; one of the benefactors of Lincoln Chautauqua which owns Brainerd Park, named in her honor. As a girl Mrs. Brainerd knew Abraham Lincoln well. Mrs. Brainerd traveled extensively in the later years of her life and visited Bermuda, Jamaica, the far west and all sections of this country as well as Europe. She fell and broke her hip in 1923, and due to it not healing properly, she was bedfast until her death.
