Notes for Heaton Owsley:
Heaton Owsley died at his home in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois and was buried there in Graceland Cemetery (State of Illinois, Certificate of Death). He graduated 1877 from Center College, Danville, Boyle County, Kentucky. He then came to Chicago, living there in 1880 in the home of his parents and stating his profession to be the manufactur of large toys. With his brother, Harry, he became half-owner of the St. Nicholas Manufacturing Company and retired from that enterprise in 1900. The St. Nicholas Manufacturing Company made the Hibbard, Spencer, and Barlette bicycles and most likely made roller-skates as well. Heaton and Harry were also inventors and held patents for improvements to the bicycle wheel, the roller-skate wheel and the bicycle seat. Carter Harrison Jr. used the bicycle as his campaign gimmick to help him win election in 1897. "Not the Champion Cyclist, but the Cyclist's Champion." They also built a bicycle built for ten for Carter's Century of Road Club.

Following his retirement he devoted his attention primarily to the real estate business. His 1st wife, Harriet, was the daughter of Edward and Susan Victoria (Joyes) Byrne. Harriet died of asthma and was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Sangamon County. He was married to his 2nd wife, Caroline, daughter of Carter Henry and Sophonisba Grayson (Preston) Harrison III, at Old Trinity Church in New York City. Carter Harrison was 5 times mayor of Chicago. Caroline was buried in Graceland Cemetery, Chicago. See The American Historical Society, Inc.
