 Includes NotesNotes for Patrick Joyes:
The genealogy of Mr. Patrick Joyes is derived from the ancient records of this city of Galway, confirmed by authentic proofs and attested by the most credible evidence.

Be it known to all, that the beginning of the thirteenth century of our era there came from the northern part of England into County Galway, Ireland, a noble family named Joyes, whose origin was derived from a noble French Family DeJoyeuse, who first entered England with King William called the conquerer; as may be seen in the life of that distinguished man Thomas Joyes, the English Cardinal, published at Paris in 1315. This family Joyes bought large possessions and extensive lands in this section, parts of which they yet hold, as well in County Mayo, as in Galway. Some however were confiscated in the Irish troubles, especially in the time of Oliver Cromwell whom this family oposed.

This family is among the number of ancient families that founded the city of Galway, which for many generations they ruled in civil and religious matters with royal authority. They were enobled by Henry VIII, King of England and afterwards confirmed in their privileges by Charles II.

Many of this family adorned the church - such as the illustrious and noble Robert Joyes, archbishop of Armagh, the brother of John, Count D'Etou, Gregory Joyes, abbot of Cambery; Michael Joyes, Archdeacon of Armagh, who founded the Monastery of the Dominican Fathers at Lourain and the most liberal and reverend John Joyes, the Warden of Galway, the uncle of Patrick Joyes."

(above translated from the Latin)

"The Reverend John Joyes of Oxford in the county of Mayo, was elected the Warden of the Catholic Collegiate Church of St. Nicholas in 1770. This gentleman continued Warden until February 1783, when he departed this life, leaving behind a reputation of a good and pious pastor, always gealous in the cause of religion and particularly in the reproval of the public vice and immortality."

"The town and county of Galway were settled principally by thirteen families one of which was the family of Joyes. This old Galway Family is of ancient and was allied to the Welsh and British princes, Thomas Joyes the first of the name that came to Ireland sailed from Wales in the reign of Edward I and arrived with his fleet at Thornoud in Munster, where he married Auorah O'Brien, daughter of the chief of of that district; From thence, putting to sea, he directed his course to the Western part of Counaught where he acquired considerable tracts of territory which his posterity still inhabit.

While on the voyage his wife was delivered of a son whom he named Mac Mara, son of the sea. Mac Mara married the daughter of O'Flaherty prince of Sar Counage. He extended his father's acquisitions and from him descended the rest of the Joyes, a race of men of extraordinary stature who for centuries past inhabited the mountainous district of Sar Counanght.

Walter Joyes, brother of Thomas, Cardinal of Sebina of this name and family was Archbishop of Armaugh. He resigned in 1311 and was succeeded by his brother Roland. The former was confessor to Edward II and author of several works."
