The records of the War Department show that Thomas Owsley, while living in Virginia, enlisted 26 November 1776 and served as a sergeant in Captain Win Smith's Company 11th Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel Daniel Morgan. He was wounded and taken prisoner 1 October 1777. He was returned in July, 1778, and his name first appears on the roll of Captain Charles Porterfield's Company, 7th Virginia Regiment for the month of March, 1779, dated April 3, 1779 at Camp Middlebrook, with the remark "on furlough".
The report of the Secretary of War in the U.S. pension roll published in 1835 says that Thomas Owsley (Ousley) Sr., a sergeant in the Virginia line moved to Rockcastle County, Kentucky. He received an annual allowance of $96.00 and the sum of $666.40 having been placed on the pension rolls 5 March 1819. A list of the Virginia Reserves in the Virginia State Library shows that Thomas Owsley served in the 5th Virginia Regiment as well. B. Kentucky Land Grants
