Notes for F
RED LOIS BEASLEY:
I had an interview with my father on March 8 1998 and this is a result of my dialogue with him concerning his life during the 1930's.

Fred Lois Beasley was 12 years old in 1930. He had four brothers and three sisters; their names were James, Morris, R.L., himself, Katherine, Ozell, and Imogene.
Around 1926 to 1929 the family lived in Fluvana.
The stove they had to cook on was a wood stove and for a refrigerator they lowered a well rope down the well with the milk on it to keep it cool.
The house was also heated by the wood stove.
The home they lived in during this time period was rented. The owner furnished the house and the family worked the land sharecropping. The house was one story, wood framed, with four rooms and a porch.

Fred went to school to the fourth grade until he turned 15 then he didn't go regularly. His school was 2 1/2 miles from home. The school provided the books. He had a hard time memorizing things, he says, is the only experience he had while going to school.

Back in the 1920's, the family farmed cotton and such.

I asked him how he decided what he wanted to be when he grew up. His response was he liked to mechanic on old cars so he knew he wanted to do that.

During his childhood, one of his earliest memory of home and family was when he was four years old, he got lye poisoning when living at Friendship and almost died. When he was six years old, he and his brother James were sawing blocks for a wagon. This boy named Boatman was going to split the wagon with an ax and James and Dad both grabbed for it at the same time. The ax came down on Dad's finger and cut it off with an ax.

Back then, the only toys to play with were used bottles to play cars with.

His mother went to church regularly with Roy Evans and family when they lived in Fluvana.

The family first owned a car in 1922. They got a radio in 1935, but no phonograph.
There was musical talent in the family. Dad played around with a mandolin. His brother James could play the guitar, mandolin and piano.

The only pet the family had was a cat.

For entertainment back then, people went to dances or they'd go walking. Sometimes one family would invite the other families over for dancing.
They weren't allowed to date without a chaperone.
(This is the end of that interview)

Notes:
Fred's mother died while they were living in Fluvana, Texas, of blood poisoning a few days after giving birth to their youngest brother R. L.
Henry took the oldest boys back to Hopkins County, Texas and left the girls with people in Fluvana. I don't know who they were, if they were family or what.
They moved to Cumby and when Henry remarried my grandmother Bessie Hipp, he sent for the girls, but let R. L. stay in Fluvana and be raised by another family.

My dad was only 10 years old when his mother died.
