Notes for William Henry HICKS, Jr.: Bill is quite an outdoorsman. He is an avid hunter and fisherman. Most of his hunting has been for white-tail deer, still hunting with a rifle, although he has killed many deer with a shotgun as well as a bow and arrow. He has done quite a bit of fresh and saltwater fishing. He enjoys anthing to do with the woods, including a simple hike. He has also successfully hunted other types of game in his life, including doves and squirrels, although his most enjoyable hunting experiences have been white-tail deer. He has spent numerous hours studying the habits of white-tail deer and simply enjoys watching them as they go about their daily routines. He enjoys having deer feeders around his residence so that he can watch them feed at various hours of the day or night. These deer are, of course, considered pets and are therefore off limits for anything other than watching.
Bill is also quite good at amateur photography, and has been an avid reader for most of his life.
Although Bill had a promising career blossoming at Scott Paper Company, he set his goals much higher - to a profession of accountancy. He opted to attend University of South Alabama after he was married, and was in his 30's when he graduated from college. Karen, his only daughter, was in the first grade. For this reason, he was considered a nontraditional student. He received high grades throughout his college years and was awarded scholarships based on his performance. He was well-respected by the most revered professors, and continues to have contact with them into his retirement. (In fact, several of those professors also taught Karen during her pursuit of an accounting degree.)
Bill built his career by serving 20 years as Controller for Bender Shipbuilding & Repair in downtown Mobile, a very large and respected company. The Bender family is a very old and respected name in the Mobile area. Mr. Thomas B. Bender, Jr. has continued to contact Bill on numerous occasions when his expertise was needed of special projects, in spite of Bill's retirement in 2003. The Bender family is simply not known for having this type of contact with any past employees.
