Notes for J
IMMIE LUCRETIA STEVENS:
She was the daughter of Zadok Ford Stevens and Caroline Elizabeth Finley, who because of the unrest followinag the Civil War, left their native Guntown, Miss. where he had been in the mercantile business and took up ranching in California. There at Tulara, Miss Lutie was born on Nov. 7, 1870. When she was about 6, her father, due to the severe drought and insufficient grazing land, disposed of his thousand head of sheep and returned to Mississippi-- first to Guntown, then toTupelo.
When her older sister Hattie later taught at Aberdeen (Miss) College, Lutie also attended and studied there. Shortly thereafter, the sister came to Elgin to teach; Miss Lutie came, too, taking the county Teacher Exams. She taught near Bastrop; but then returned to her family in Tupelo where she took a Business Course and became a Court Stenographer (a new venture for a woman) for an uncle who was Circuit Judge there. After the uncle's death, she retained a while as Reporter for his successor; but, she also became interested in a deeper study of the Bible and religious history and went to Zion City near Chicago where for some 2 years or more she served as Secretary for the editor of a church publication, following which she again came to Elgin to be near her sister who had become Mrs. H. B. Smith and one of Elgin's leading citizens.
Miss Lutie again taught school, this time at Elgin where her intellect and rare abilities were deeply appreciated; and where she identified herself with Elgin's cultural as well as religious groups and became a member of the newborn Elgin New Century (Women's)Club (Feb. 1897) and an active Sunday School teacher in the Methodist Church.
In 1900, she was married to Mr. A. H. Carter, himself a former Elgin Teacher, a farmer, and at that time, a well known, successful merchant and businessman here, and active in the Methodist Church and Masonic Circles. His 2nd wife has died 2 years before, leaving him with 8 children (the oldest being by his 1st wife, also deceased). Miss Litie's coming into htat larte home with that large family, became and continued to be a rich blessing to all who knew her, including her jown later -born 4 children and a 2 year old grandson (1920) whose father, Brooks Carter, (of the 2nd marriage) was Gov. of a Province in the Phillipines, and whose mothr died aboardship while in route from there to the States to await the birth of her 2nd child. All 13 of the Carter children, after graduating from Elgin Hi. were encouraged to attend College; several went to Southwestern, some to Texas U; 3 to former C. I. A. in Denton; l to San Marcos College; and Finley, a pioneer in electronics, went to Rice, where he graduated with distinction and from there went to General Electric in New York and later to Sylvania and Stanford Institute in California.
She and her husband moved to Austin in 1934 to be near their two daughters who had secretarial positions there. In Austin she identified herself with the WSCS of the 1st Methodist Church--they later made her an Honorary Member; as also she was honored by the Elgin NC. C. (1940); and by the Austin Garden Club's iris group--in recognition of her work in the cultivation of some exotic iris plants of which she raised a large number. She loved to "commune with Nature" and to "consider the lilies" and reach-down and look-up and view God's great, wide wonderful World!
After an illness of over a year Miss Lutie crossed over at 11:30 PM on August 8, 1963. Last rites were held at Weed- Corley Funeral Home in Austin with burial at the family burial plot in the Elgin Cemetery.
