Died on the 4th day of Dec. 1877, at his residence in Shueyville, Johnson
Co., Iowa, Woodson Martin, in the 81st year of his age. Father Martin was
born in Nelson County, Va. June 18, 1797. In early manhood he moved to
Augusta county, that state, where by honest industry and honorable dealing
he secured the confidence and respect of his neighbors. In 1815 he
removed, with his family, to Upshur county, West Va., where he resided
eleven years. In 1856 he, with most of his family, came to Shueyville,
where, among former neighbors, surrounded by most of his family, he lived
respected to the time of his death. Father Martin lived many years without
a saving interest in Christ Always friendly to religion, respecting God's
house and his people; supporting the cause of Christ as he had means, he
yet suffered his companion and a number of his children to enter the
Christian church without him. But a few years since, during a series of
meetings in the church at Shueyville, he came, tottering under the weight
of years, a penitent to the altar of prayer. After seeking for several
evenings, he professed to have found the "pearl of great price." The
writer of this notice, conversed with him, in reference to his prospects
beyond the grave, a few days, and again only an hour, before his death,
when he said that all was right. Thus, at the eleventh hour, he entered
his Masters vineyard, and is gone to receive "whatsoever is right." On
Thursday, he was buried in the Shueyville grave yard, by the side of his
companion, who preceded him a few years.
