The Albee family name has been traced to Normandy around 1040, at which time it was spelled de Albi. The 12th century spelling was changed to d'Albe to aid in pronounciation, later refined to Albe to give the name a more English rather than French appearance. By 1575, the customary spelling of Albee was in use as it is still in use today. The history of Albee in America has its beginnings when Rebecca & Edward Albee(b.1575-1585 Ipswich,England) son Benjamin(b.1613-1614 Norwich, Norfolk, England; d.1686 Swansea Massachusettes) came to the Colonies on the merchant ship Bonaventure in 1637. Benjamin & his wife Hanna Miller gave birth to son James Albee(b.1643 Massachusettes; d.1717 Milford, Massachusettes)who was the first Albee born in the America's, who with wife Hannah Cooke had son Benjamin(b.1671). This Benjamin Albee was married to Abiel Wheelock whose family founded Wheelock College & Dartmouth University. Their son Obadiah(b.10-29-1705) was named after Abiel's brother Obadiah Wheelock, who owned land adjacent to Benjamin Albee's land. Obadiah & wife Jean Moss son was also named Benjamin(b.1740 Holiston, Maine) & who with wife Abigail Clifford had son John(b.1780 Wiscasset, Maine). John Albee married Sarah Donnell who gave birth to Moses Donnell Albee(b.9-16-1810; d.6-6-1891), who with wife Emily Greenough had George Henry Albee(b.6-29-1854 Stephenson County, Illinois; d.6-6-1941 Missouri).George Henry Albee traversed the Oregon Trail in 1875, and again in 1878, to join brother Frank selling horses to the Union Pacific Railroad being constructed. A 50 cent piece commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Oregon Trail was presented to George Henry Albee in 1928 in Guernsey, Wyoming which is a couple miles from the Oregon Trail ruts that were cut by the wagon wheels in the soft limestone, also nearby Register Cliff, where George's name is carved along with the names of other pioneers headed west via wagon train. President McKinley's name was engraved on the coin, which was of significance since George Henry Albee was married to Dianna Belle(Dice) McKinley, cousin of the late president. George Albee's son Charles Moses(Pop) Albee(b.10-7-1883 Mendota, Missouri; d.11-9-1959 Guernsey, Wyoming) moved to the histoic Guernsey, Wyoming area where he worked for the now defunct C.F.&I Mine in Sunrise, Wyoming.Pop & Jenny May Boston son Charles(Chip) Francis Albee(b.10-7-1923 Unionville, Missouri; d.9-17-2004) served as ground to air navigator for the Army Air Corps(now the Air Force) on Ascension Island during World War 2.
