Notes for William Spencer:
Migrated as an adult, without parents. There were four brothers and one sister that migrated: William, Thomas, Michael, Gerard and their sister, Elizabeth.

William was a Deputy to Massachusetts General Court, 1634 thru 1637 and a representative to Connecticut General Court, 1639 thru 1640. He graduated from Trinity College in Cambridge. He came to this country in 1631(?). Settled in Cambridge. He was on the committee to frame a body of fundamental laws for the colony and was a founder of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Boston, his name appearing in the original charter. In 1634 he was on the committee to confer with the governor and assistants in regard to the care of the common stock, which led to the formation of the House of Representatives. In 1632, he returned to England to bring his wife Agnes Harris. They moved to Hartford, Connecticut in 1639, where his brother Thomas had settled. He took the Freeman's oath on March 4th, 1632, Selectman in 1635, Lt. of the Train Band in 1632 and charter member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in 1638/39.

William played an important role in the activities of the Massachusetts Bay Company and was co-founder of both Cambridge, Massachusetts and Hartford, Connecticut. William was the first Town Clerk of Cambridge and later served as a "Selectman" for several years. He played even more important roles for the General Court of Massachusetts Bay Company, especially in regard to surveying and setting the boundary lines for many of the towns under the control of the Court. For many years he served as a Deputy representing Newe Towne at the frequent meetings of the General Court in Cambridge and in Boston.
