Notes for J
OHANN MICHAEL MAI:
From Don Watson e-mail at dwat6911@nstar.net.
Hessen is 21,120 square kilometers in size and is bordered by the federal states of Bayern, Baden-Württemberg, Rheinland-Pfalz, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Niedersachsen, and Thüringen. Its population is about 6.25 million. While breath-taking views of forests, lakes, villages, hills, valleys, and castles are seen throughout Hessen, it was not spared the horror of day-and-night bombing during World War II, and most of what the visitor sees has been reconstructed. Sometimes to the dismay of the visitor from the United States, (who only wants to see castles, mountains, and forests), tall buildings occupy space in many of the larger cities, and neon and electric signs, many in English, are also present (Frankfurt; Kassel). One cannot help but notice the contrast between the narrow streets of the villages with street signs that explain nothing (just where is 'Brunnenweg 39' from downtown?), and the wide super highways with signs that explain everything.
In the 19th century Hesse was a large area of Germany, situated somewhat west of mid-central, and dotted by villages. It was divided into the duchies of Hesse-Darmstadt and Hesse-Kassel (old Casl). Today there are over 400 cities, towns, and villages in the Federal German State of Hessen, including Frankfurt am Main (Frankfurt on the Main River), which is the movie capitol; Wiesbaden (the state capitol), and Fulda (the famous "Fulda Gap" of the cold war). Hessen is today divided into three federal administrative districts, known as "Regierungsbezirk" (Ray-gear'-ungs-bay-zierk). These are the southern district of Darmstadt (NOT the town alone, but an entire district of many towns); The middle district of Giessen; and the northern district of Kassel. Looking back to earlier times, we see:
"The town of Eberstadt, then called Eberstadt im Rheingau, is first mentioned in 782, when a certain Walther, along with his wife, Williswinde, gave their entire property to the Lorsch Convent.."
This is the first recorded entry of Eberstadt in the land of the Hesse, whose earliest recorded ancestors were probably the "Chatten," a Germanic folk in existence over 2,000 years ago. Eberstadt has since been absorbed by Darmstadt, a major city with the status of a county (Kreisfreie Stadt, pronounced Cryes-frya Stahdt). Kreisfreie means county-free. A Landkreis (lahnd-cryes) in Germany is roughly the same as a county in the United States. This system is employed throughout the Federal Republic of Germany. The area to the south of Frankfurt is heavily forested, especially in the area of the Odenwald (Forest of Odes, south of Darmstadt), which leads to the famous Black Forest, and then to the soul-stirring Alps. City-dwellers in Frankfurt are always eager to "get south" to the Odenwald and beyond. Given the opportunity, one should not miss a drive through the Odenwald, especially the towns of Michelstadt and Buchen, with marvelous half-timbered homes, and where souvenir shops abound!

Prior to the Augsburg Confession
(1530), the Christian Church consisted of two major branches: Roman
Catholicism in the West and Othodoxy in the East. (They broke apart in the 11th
century.) So, although many Europeans (e.g. Huss, Luther) had questioned the
practices of Rome, there was no major breakaway until 1530, when several
German noblemen (e.g. Philipp of Hessen) broke away from Rome and becoming
"Lutheran," bringing their subjects with them.
Now, as for the Mai's being regional: that is possible, of course, but bear in
mind that there were many socio-economic and political upheavals, throughout
German history, that resulted in sizeable internal migrations and population
shifts. For example, the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) had a profound impact.
The point is that some of our Mai's may be native Hessens, and some may be
native Saxons who left...let's say....the Magdeburg area to escape the
Imperial forces and Catholic control.

Hope this helps. Dave Dietrich.
