A truly great person on the Shelby Co, IL list has found my Rosa M. Cummins as an infant in the 1880 Census of Jackson Twp, Brown Co, IN as follows:
Poling, John Sr.            W      M      61yo      Married      Farmer            Born VA      Father b VA      Mother b VA
Lettice A.      W(wife)      F      60yo      Married      housekeeper      Born VA      Father b VA      Mother b VA
Sarah            W(dau)      F      28yo      Single      Servant            Born OH      Father b VA      Mother b VA
Cummins, A            W(son-in-law)      M      30yo      Single      Laborer      Born OH      Father b VA      Mother b VA
Sandofer, Edwin      W(grndson)      M      12yo      Single      wks on farm      Born IN      Father b IN      Mother b VA
William            W(grndson)      M      10yo      Single      wks on farm      Born IN      Father b IN      Mother b VA
Cummins, Rosa M.      W(grnddau)      F      9/12                  Born IN            Father b IN      Mother b VA

The implication of this is that Rosa's mother and the mother of the Sandofer boys are dead (or run off), and that Rosa's mother was a Poling by birth-though notice A Cummins was born in OH, and Rosa's father was born in IN-so either A. Cummins was not Rosa's real father, or the Census taker was given eroneous information? Does anyone out their know of these families?

  Notes for CHARLES PETER MAY:
Karl and Johannah moved to New Mexico when their son Walter was 2 years old, about 1908.
Charles May and Johanna Mehl and Hazel Della May. Taken ca. 1916. Charles and his brother Albert lived near Estancia (Torrence County) New Mexico for several years returning to Illinois around 1920. Hazel was distracted by a bit the photographer's discarded film-backing paper. A "family dish" crockery bowl was used to transport food in the move to New Mexico and the return trip to Illinois. Passed on to the descendant with the most children, it was given to Hazel (with 6 children) who passed it on to her son, Leo, whose family consists of 8 children.
