Levi Newton (b. January 7, 1764, d. July 27, 1845)
Notes for Levi Newton:
He fought in the Revolutionary War. He fought in the Battle of Saratoga. The British plan was to divide and conquer. Burgoyne was instructed to lead an army down the Champlain-Hudson River route to New York and split the colonies in two. As Burgoyne moved south, his supply lines became dangerously extended, casualties and desertions depleted his ranks, and most of his indians disappeared. Meanwhile, the American forces grew as reinforcements arrived daily. On September 19th and again on October 7, 1777, British forces were halted from moving south from Saratoga. the American forces, by now numbered three times those of Burgoyne's, held an impregnable position at Bemis heights, which had been fortified on the advice of Tadeusz Kosciuszko. Attempting to retreat from Saratoga, burgoyne was surrounded and surrendered his entire army to General Gates.
Saratoga was a significant turning point in the war. Not only were the British hopes for an early victory smashed and American morale boosted, but more importantly, France was convinced that the Americans were worthy of open support. Negotiations to that and were soon under way in Paris. Annals of American, vol.2, page 473.
