1. JOHN1 HODGES was born 1765 in Essex County VA, and died 24 Dec 1834 in Abbeville District, SC. He married FRANCES ANDERSON 1790 in Abbeville District, SC. She was born 1765 in Caroline, VA, USA, and died 14 Mar 1844 in Abbeville District, SC.

On April 1, 1780, at age 15, he volunteered as a private in the United States army under Capt Samuel Rosamond. They marched to Beach Island near Augusta, Georgia. . He became ill and eventually went home and rejoined Capt Rosamond in May 1780. He recounted in his pension application that Charleston had fallen and the area was dangerous for the friends of liberty as there was rape and plundering and inciting and influencing the Indians on the borders of South Carolina ...savage acts of cruelty and outrage toward the Whigs and they the Tories frequently themselves taking the lead in the plunder and depredation. This state of things existing at the time in full energy against the the comparatively few friends of liberty in Carolina give to these friends almost constant and active employment in appeasing in every manner they .....this double enemy until a third enemy, the British under Col. Crugen affected a lodgment of their forces in the District 96 at a place called 96 or sometimes Cambridge which force together with their allies the Tories and the Indians kept the surrounding settlement or country in a subjected state until the arrival of Gen Greene with his forces before Cambridge to which he laid siege and to which place the Whigs of the country flocked to aid the besiegers in driving or expelling the British. John Hodges was marched in Capt Rosamond's company with all the Whig militia of the country who were all under the command of Col. .....Pickens to succor and aid Gen Green in his advances against Col. Crougen at Cambridge or 96 and continous there in active employment against the beseiged British under Gen Greene until he raised the seige in June 1781and marched his force as well as the forces under Pcikens towards the Cor(r)gan (???) River in this state at which post and to the ....of South Carolina to check the tories in that section of country according John Hodges in Capt Rosamonds company was marched back to the District 96 and the soon after discharged. John Hodges at the seige of Cambridge lost a horse saddle and bridle appraised at $100 which fell into the hands of the British for which he never received one cent in any way towards the payment for his loss directly or indirectly.and that from the best of his recollection he computes this tour of service and duty to be at least nine months.
