Thomas Jefferson White and Frances Elizabeth Hodges White (Grandpa and Grandma White):

My Grandpa White raised apples. Winesap apples mainly. Dad built a cellar for him to put the apples in for storage. Grandpa would go down there in the wintertime and cull them out. He put straw down in the bottom of the wagon to protect the apples and took them around the to sell by the peck all the way to as many bushels that you wanted.
They were living about a mile and a half west of Grandview School. He weighed about 170-175 pounds and was about 5 feet 11 inches. She weighed less than a hundred pounds. I think he died in 1924 and was buried at Crittenden Cemetery. There were living the Grandview area at the time mama and dad married. They lived in Arkansas before and had lived in Mississippi before that. The house where I was born was half a mile south of where they lived.
Grandpa White and grandma got up at 4:30 the year round. In the wintertime he would go out and harness his horses if he was going to be working them. They didn't have a well. They had a cistern. It was dug I don't know how deep, probably 25 feet. They caught rainwater. That was their drinking water. In the early twenties they had a well drilled. It took the guy two maybe three years to drill it. It went down 350 feet before finally they got water. When they got it up and drank it, it wasn’t any good. IT had an oil scum on it
I like to go by Grandpa and Grandma White’s house on the way home from school so I could get an apple from their root cellar.
Grandma White chewed tobacco. She would keep chews up on the top part of the porch by the roof.
