Find Family
I am researching the Allen family. Samuel Allen, my great, great, great grandfather is my "brick wall". He is believed to have been born in November 1767. This is a close estimate based on census records. His parents/siblings are unknown. He is believed to have come from York County Maine to Southeastern Ohio in the late 1700's. He first shows up on the tax rolls of Washington county Ohio in 1800 and continues living in the area of Washington, Morgan and Noble Counties. He held land patents for the SE and NE quarters of Section 10, Township 6,Range 9 of Olive Township, Morgan County, Ohio.

Samuel Allen is believed to have married Dorcus Abbot(t) January 21, 1787 in York County, Maine. He later married Lydia Hussey Glidden, widow of John Glidden, in 1818. He operated a mill on Duck Creek in Olive Township, Morgan County, Ohio. The date of his death is believed to be between 1851 and 1853, based on a probated will found in Washington County.

Samuel was the father of John B. Allen, my great, great grandfather. He also is the father of Relief Glidden Dudley, wife of Gilman Dudley. Other children are believed to be Elisha, Martha Jane, James, Samuel, Katherine and Dominicus.

John B. Allen was born in 1797 supposedly in the area later known as Morgan County, Ohio. John B. married Ruth Matheny in 1817 in Guernsey County, Ohio and had the following children:

Joseph O.L. - 7/3/1820
Martha Relief - 8/4/1823
Caroline T. - 2/26/1825
Olivia A. - 4/6/1828
Samuel Albert A. - 6/9/1830
Sidney James - 7/26/1833
John Hezekiah - 12/19/1837 (My Great Grandfather)

The John B. Allen family left Southeastern Ohio in approximately 1847 and moved to Mercer County, Illinois. Later, many family members moved with John B. and Ruth in 1861 to Marshall County, KS. John B. died there in September 1863 while his youngest son, John Hezekiah, was serving in the 9th Kansas Cavalry during the Civil War.

John Hezekiah Allen married Mary Elizabeth Terry After the war many of the John H. Allen family members, plus Ruth and Sidney James returned to Mercer County IL. John and Mary had the following children: John William, George James, Eugene died as a child), Ida May, Frank Adams, Leon Lewis, Thomas Wilson, and Amos Leslie. My grandfather, Amos Leslie Allen was born March 17, 1884.
