Arrival in South Dakota, July, 1878
Lars and Kirsten Madsen were born in or near Thisted, Denmark. They emigrated to South Dakota about 1878 with six children. Two older girls remained in Denmark. After arriving in Sioux Falls by train, they took an oxcart and homesteaded near Lake Albert in Brookings County on what was later the Delzer farm. There they built their first home, a sod house.

Lars Madsen was born in Sennels, Sogn, Thisted, Amt., Denmark, in the year 1831 and came in the year 1878 to the northwest corner of Brookings County, South Dakota, where he homesteaded and lived to the time of his death September 12, 1917, following a stroke of paralysis six days previous. His age was 86 years, one month and 27 days.
He was married in Denmark in the year 1857 to Miss Kirsten Christensen. Eight children were born to them in Denmark, six of whom came with their parents to America and two came a year or so later. The children are all living and are Mrs. Mattie Marie Knutson, Mrs. Sina Damm, C. L. Madsen, Martin Madsen, Elsie Katrina Christensen, Mrs. Petrea Kirstine Anderson and Otto Madsen. The children were all present at the funeral except Mrs. Anderson of Dallas, Oregon.
The mother passed away February 6, 1909.
Deceased fought in the war of 1864 with Denmark against Germany and Austria. One battle of three or four hours duration in which he took part there were between 600 and 700 men lost and he received a medal from the King of Denmark. Fifty years after that battle each of those that fought was given one hundred crowns per year as an honorary gift.
He was a life long member of the Lutheran Church.
Funeral service was conducted by Rev. Jorgensen at the home Friday, Sept. 14 at 1 o’clock p.m. and the remains were laid to rest in the Poinsett Cemetery.
Deceased was a real pioneer, his family being one of the first to settle in the Poinsett country. Luverne, Minn., was the nearest railroad point. An ox team was used to come from that point when he homesteaded twelve miles north of Arlington. Deceased was always an honored citizen of his community and will be greatly missed. He leaves a large family connection residing in this locality.
