Notes for J
OHN (1) GRICE:
§ 2.1
"John (1) Grice was in the service of a farmer until he was 17 years old. He became incapacitated for actual manual labor by the kick of a horse, sustaining a serious injury to his left leg, and in consequence he was apprenticed to learn the trade of a miller. As he received no money while serving the term of his indenture, he went into debt for clothes, and in order to pay it he went to work for a mason, with whom he remained three years, thoroughly learning the business. He spent the next three years on a farm, in the employment of a man named Clement Bland, who abandoned agriculture to become a miller. Mr. Grice continued in his service subsequent to the transfer about a year, when he engaged as a farm laborer for Thomas Pinder, with whom he continued for ten years. He left his employment to come to the United States, and landed at the port of New York in 1856, accompanied by a brother [Luke]. He proceeded to Hamilton, Canada, where he worked for a man named Dodd, running an engine in a saw-mill. His employer failed and he lost $100. His next enterprise was the purchase of a piece of land in company with his brother, which they were obliged to surrender on account of a defective title. He then engaged in the management of a farm, owned, by John Morden, and he operated in this capacity four years. While in this employment, his abilities as a mechanic were in requisition, as he was able to perform the duties of a first class mason. The year after leaving Mr. Morden he worked for William Campbell as a farm laborer. He then engaged as a miller and continued in that pursuit seven years. In 1873 he came to Michigan and bought the farm (section 24, Fremont Township) on which he has since lived and labored. It comprised 80 acres, with but slight improvement. Mr. Grice has now 45 acres in fair tillable condition." [source: history of John Grice, "Portrait and Biographical Album of Sanilac County," Michigan pub. 1884]

§ 2.2
John (1) married Mary Ann Shortliff on May 3, 1846. Mary was born in 1823, in Rutlandshire, England. Before her death on May 5, 1853 in Rutlandshire, she bore him four children <2, all of whom were born before he moved to America. We know nothing about James and Elizabeth Grice, being as young as they were, they must have come to America.
After the death of John's (1) first wife, and before he left England, for America, he married Elizabeth Money. Elizabeth was born on April 12, 1822 in Barrowby, Granthum, Lincolnshire, England.

§ 2.4

Elizabeth Money Grice had a niece, named Sarah Jane Money. She was born on January 28, 1853 in Spittlegate, Granthum, Lincolnshire, England. She lived in England and while still in her teens, was sent for, to come to Hamilton, to serve as housekeeper, this being her profession. Now, John (2) and Sarah got together, unmarried, and to this union came William Money Grice. William Money was born on March 26, 1870, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. John (1) raised his grandson as his own.

Notes for E
LIZABETH MONEY:

Possible parentage: A baptism for an Elizabeth Money daug. of Francis and Elizabeth Money, Dec 1/1811 in Barrowby. (Source: Parish Records for Lincolnshire, England.) It is entirely possible that in transcription 1822 looked like 1811. Waiting for more concrete connection here. Apr. 3/1999 MRA
