Descendants of the Schulte-Althoff Family of Flaesheim, GerUpdated May 19, 2001 |
|
| The Schulte-Althoff farm is located at Flaesheim, near Haltern, just north of the Recklinghausen, Dusseldorf, Dortmund, Essen area of Westphalia, Germany. We have pictures of the farm from the 1970's and 1990's. The "Schulte" part of the name was a title given to the largest landowner in the area in Germany. Theodore dropped the Schulte from his name in the 1880's, and his nephews, Christopher and Henry dropped it as well, but the Schulte-Althoff farm and relatives in Germany still retain the full Schulte-Althoff name. Theodore Schulte-Althoff left Germany in 1856 and immigrated to Delaware County, IA. After serving in the Civil War, Theodore helped to found the town and parish of Petersburg, IA, married Elizabeth Koelker, and fathered nine children. Theodore Althoff died March 2, 1914 at the age of 93. He and Elizabeth lived their entire married life on the farm at Petersburg. Theodore's sister, Franciska, married Wm. Hoefer in Germany and immigrated to America and Iowa in 1876, with ten of her twelve children. They also lived in Delaware County, IA. Two of Thedore's nephews, Christopher and Henry Althoff, sons of Theodore's eldest brother and thus the farm owner William, came to America in the 1870's. Henry married Theresa Grote at Petersburg, and then settled at Salem,So. Dakota. His only child, Sophia, married Joseph Graff, and had four children who lived to adulthood. The only daugher, Laurene, married Louis Westhoff. Christopher lived in Iowa, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Montana and Wyoming. He had two children in his first marriage to Sophia Luchtel, and twelve children in his second marriage to Bernadina Johanna Bertling (Mrs. Henry Tuschen, a widow with two sons). Our 3rd edition, Year 2000 family history book is complete except for the descendants of Fransiska Hoefer, and Henry and Christopher Althoff. We are interested in finding more of the descendants of the Hoefers and of Christopher and Henry Althoff. We have a sketchy family tree done in the 1980's by Dr. Walter Schulte-Althoff during his trip to America, and have received more information from descendants from both his first and second marriage, along with a family picture taken about 1906 of Christopher, Bernadina (Bernadette)and Christopher's children, including Elizabeth (Schettler) and Herman from his first marriage and other photos that can be e-mailed to you. |
