I have been researching the lineage of Elizabeth Farington of Shaw Hall near Preston, Lancashire, UK. Her marriage to William Gardner produced many wonderful children and in my research I have discovered the lives of Dorothea "Dolly" Gardner and that of her brother, Alan Gardner who became Lord Alan Gardner, Admiral of the Blue and a member of Parliment in the early 1800's. Through them I have learned a great deal about their lives and that of their children, especially that of Sir Robert Barrie, second-born son of Dolly Gardner and her husband Dr. Robert Barrie, Surgeon with the 31st Regiment of Foot stationed in St. Augustine, Florida, prior to our American Revolutionary War. At this outpost, Sir Robert Barrie was born in 1772, the only surviving son to this union (a first-born son died early in his infancy). Dr. Robert Barrie died tragically enroute to England, falling victim to pleuratic fever, and was buried at sea in 1775 while trying valiently to get himeself and his dear family back to England.

I have finally come full circle and have visited the final resting place of Sir Robert Barrie and his beloved wife, Lady Julia Wharton Ingilby Barrie, at All Saints Church in Ripley, Yorkshire, next to Lady Julia's home, Ripley Castle.

They were the parents of William Barrie; Julia Barrie Boodle; Eliza Roberta Barrie Uppleby; Georgiana Barrie (Sr. Mary Gonzaga); and Dorothea "Dolly" Barrie.

I would very much like to be in touch with anyone who has information about these people. I have information on the illustrious Boodle family of which Julia was a part (Edward Boodle, her husband, was an attorney with the Boodle firm in London); and the Uppleby family of Lincolnshire of which Eliza Roberta married into through her husband Leadbetter Uppleby.
Georgiana Barrie was heralded by Queen Victoria for her work alongside Florence Nighingale in the Crimean War and I understand that Dorothea "Dolly" Barrie was also a nurse (but never married).
