SURNAMES INCLUDED BELOW: LEEKY, LEEKA, POOL, WILSON, CARTER, HAM, BOTKIN. We are researching the following: MARTHA ELLEN LEEKY(LEAKY, LEEKE) (orphaned at 4 years old) : b. approx. 1858place unknown m. Sept. 27, 1879 to Marcellus BOTKIN d. April 12, 1939buried at Lancaster Kansas.Martha was raised by Susan and Horatio POOL in Maryville MO (1870 census) Much of her adult life was spent in Atchison Kansas.According to her daughter, Martha was full blooded Native American. Martha never learned to read or write and we have seen many spellings of her last name. NEWEST RESEARCH: It is possible based on the research we now have that Martha may have been connected to a LEEKA family that is related to the ANTRIM, ROBERTS, andARMENTROUT families. Some of the LEEKA’S were Quakers and some were Mormons. Many Quakers were involved with the American Indians thru their missions. The Mormons adopted American Indian orphans during this time frame and also became guardians to them.In some cases they were known to have bought the children from Indian traders if necessary. The law at that time permitted indenture of these orphans and Martha may well have been indentured to the Pool family in Maryville. We are now researching the LEEKA'S in Fremont County, Iowa, which includes John LEEKA m. to Sarah CARTER,and their son, William LEEKA.They were active members of the RLDS Church and lived in Thurman Iowa.We are also looking in Fremont County at a Felix POOL who is listed in Madison Township, Fremont County IA on the 1860 census. InRandolph County Indiana we are researching Henry Leeka, son of Phillip Leeka, m. Eliza Wilson 1855. We know that Phillip Leeka and his wife Elizabeth adopted a child named Martha. She was born 1840 and died in 1849 according to Vol. 4 of the Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy. She would have been Henry's adopted sister. This could indicate that Henry might have been open to adoption or may have just become a guardian for an orphan. Also Henry's wife Eliza WILSON died about 1863.Henry remarried in 1866.If our Martha was either adopted or indentured to Henry, it's possible he may have found her another home or indentureship when Eliza died. The Leeka and Wilson families we are researching, both married people with the Carter surname. Specifics people we are researching among the Wilsons, Carters and Pools are in my related file(SEE BELOW). | THE KARREN AMARO HOMEPAGE Updated September 5, 2000 |
