      3. Mary L. Shaffer¹⁵, born September 20, 1852 in Ohio ¹⁶; died November 20, 1936 in Chariton, Lucas Co., IA ¹⁷. She was the daughter of 6. Abraham Shaffer and 7. Rosilla Ryun.

Notes for James A. Ryun:
According to his death certificate, James had been under a doctor's care for 2-1/2 months. His attending physician was Dr. ?.R. Jackson, who certified that he last saw James alive on 3/14/1928 and that death occurred 5:30 ?.M. on 3/15/1928. The cause of death was listed as paralysis due to cerebral softening.

Notes for Mary L. Shaffer:
Mary's tombstone clearly gives her birth year as 1852. Her death certificate lists her birth as Sept. 27, 1848. However, based on the death date on the certificate (Nov. 20, 1936) and her age at death (84 years, 1 month, 20 days), her birth date calculates to be Sept. 30, 1852.

Mary's death certificate lists her death as caused by an accident that occurred in her home. It says that there was an explosion of the stove blocking. As a result of the explosion, she suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns over her body, which is listed as the primary cause of her death. Part of it is difficult to read, but under contributory causes of death, it appears that she was unable to get out of a chair and her clothing caught on fire.
