Descendants of Johann George Gresh
Generation No. 1
1. Johann George1 Gresh1,2
was born October 18, 1724 in Germany, and died October 29, 1788 in Douglas
Township, Berks County, PA3.
He married (1) Magdlena.
She died Unknown. He married (2)
Esther Fedele April 27, 1761 in St. Michael's and Zion Church, Germantown,
Philadelphia, PA, daughter of Michael Fedele and Elizabeth. She was born September 22, 1738, and died
January 31, 1827 in Douglas Township, Berks County, PA.
Notes for Johann
George Gresh:
Johann Georg Gresch (to use the old
spelling of the name) was the founder of the family in this country. He was
born in Germany, Oct. 18, 1724, and was twenty-five years of age, when in 1749
he came to America, and shortly after he located in Douglass township, Berks
Co., Pa. He was a farmer, and it is likely that he was unmarried when he came
to this country. He died Oct. 29, 1788, and both he and his wife Esther, born
Sept. 22, 1738, died Jan 31, 1827, are buried in the Fritz burying ground near
Little Oley, where also sleep many other members of the family. They had sons:
Georg, Johann Adam and Nicholas. [Montgomery, Morton; History of Berks County]
[Guy L. Bierman Notes]
"Johan Georg Gresh was born in Germany and came to America about
1749. He was not yet married, but
married shortly after his arrival according to Morton Montgomery in his 1909
history of Berks County. By merit of one
early baptism at New Hanover Lutheran Church, New Hanover Twp., Montgomery
County, PA it is presumed that Johan Georg was twice married. First to
Magdalena (unknown last name) and second to Esther (unknown last name).
No one by the name of
Gresh appears on the 1754 tax list of Douglass Twp., Berks Co., PA but within
ten years, on December 18, 1764 for the sum of $1,000, Johann George Groesch
purchased 261 1/2 acres of land in Douglass, Berks from Thomas Barnard of
Chester Co., PA. This transaction is
evidenced by the indenture found in Deed Book Volume 5, p. 20-22 at the Berks
County Courthouse. This indenture was
recorded by Thomas Rutter Justice of the Peace for Berks County and witnessed
by Math[ias] Richard and Nicholas Bunn.
Thomas Barnard
inherited part of this land from his father Thomas Barnard and purchased the
balance from his siblings upon settlement of Thomas Srs estate. Thomas Sr. purchased the land on December 3,
1726 by deed poll as recorded in Book H: Volume 2; page 414, Philadelphia
county, PA. As both Thomas Barnard Sr
and Jr were noted as "of Chester" county, it is unlikely that they
ever lived in Douglass, Berks, but may have purchased the land as an
investment.
At the time of the
1764 indenture the property was described in part as "thence by land of
Mathias Hollabach...by land of Valentine Keely....to a post in a line of
McCalls Manor". McCalls manor
became known by this name in 1735 when George McCall, a Philadelphia merchant
purchased land from the 14,000 acre tract of John Penn, son of William
Penn. McCalls land was entirely in
Montgomery County, PA. The exact
location and boundries of the Gresh property has not been definitively
identified to date, the location of the Montgomery County line and Valentine
Keeley's property is known. This places
the Gresh property on the Little Oley side of the Valentine Keeley property,
very near and perhaps encompassing the later village of Little Oley. There has been a heavy concentration of Gresh
families in the Little Oley area for many generations since then.
In addition, at least
one reference has been found to the family burial ground surrounded by
Valentine Keeley land, that identifies this burial ground as also known as the
Gresh burial ground. Today the burial
ground is known as the Fritz Cemetery.
It became a public burial site on December 17, 1790 according to Morton
Montgomery in his 1909 history of Berks County.
At that time it was deeded from John Keeley, who inherited it from his
father Valentine Keeley, to Henry Yorgey Sr, Jacob Keeley Sr., Peter
Brunner, and John Nagle. No deed to the site has been located
confirming this action.
Eleven members of the
Gresh family, from three generations,
are buried at the Fritz Cemetery, among the 70 to 80 known burials. The
Gresh burials include Johan Georg in 1788 and his wife Esther in 1827. Esther outlived Johan Georg by more than 38
years. The youngest known child, Johan
Heinrich (b.1783) would have been 4 1/2
at the time of his father's death, while the oldest child, Magdalena
(b.1758) would have been 29. Son Johan Georg (b.1765) lived in Douglass,
Berks all of his life and is likely the son who took over the family farm at
age 23, upon his father's death.
Other Gresh burials
included Adam and George, both sons of Johan Georg Sr, and George and his wife
Catherine Gresh, grandson of the first Johan Georg. The rest of the Gresh burials were
grandchildren of Johan Georg Sr, by his children Adam and wife Anna Maria, Nicholaus and wife
Catharina, and George and Elizabeth. The
earliest burial was Johan Georg Sr. in 1788 and the latest was son Adam in
1831.
There was an
additional early Gresh, Jacob Gresh,
who's marriage to Christina Batlow/Barlow on August 13, 1809, was
recorded at New Hanover Lutheran Church.
Depending on Jacob's age at this marriage, he may have been another child of the elder Johan Georg and wife
Esther. If just 21 in 1809 at this
marriage, Jacob would have been born about
1788 and could be placed as either a child of the first or second
generation of Gresh families. However,
if he were older or it was a second marriage, he may have been born too early
to be any of the sons of the second generation.
Jacob seems to be a fairly common name in these families. There is a
Jacob (d.1827 age 7 months) buried at the Fritz and Johan Heinrich (b.1765) had
a son Jacob who married on 9-21-1822 to Anna Boyer at New Hanover Lutheran
Church.
No further information
is yet available on any of these three Jacobs and a determination must wait
until more is known." [Guy L. Bierman Notes, Oley Valley Ancestors,
BIERHAUS@verizon.net, dated August 10, 2003]
Johan George Gresh
(b.11-4-1724 d.1-31-1792) who is buried at the Fritz purchased 261.5 acres of
land from Thomas Barnard, December 18, 1764. This property was located south
east of McCall's Manor [the Pottsgroves] and land of Valentine Keely, and very
near the Fritz Cemetery.

(Johann George1)6,7,8 was born October 16, 1765 in
Douglass Twp., Berks Co., Pa., and died November 03, 1823 in Douglass Twp.,
Berks Co., Pa.. He married *Elisabeth
Handwerk9, daughter of Henry Handwerk and Anna
(Ringer). She was born February 14,
1754, and died Unknown.
Notes for George
(Johann George) Gresh:
George Gresh,
great-grandfather of James B., was born Oct. 16, 1767, and died Nov. 3, 1823,
passing his entire life in Douglass township. He was a farmer and owned
considerable land. His remains were buried in a private burial ground, known as
Fritz's Burial ground, on the farm now owned by Warren Hoffman. He married
Elizabeth Handwork, and their children were: George, Henry; Jacob; Isaac;
Aaron; Elizabeth, m. to Jacob Moser; Joseph, of Monocacy; Susan m. to John Sassaman;
Sarah, m. to Samuel Fox; Polly, m. to Henry Hartranft; and several whose names
are not recalled. [Montgomery, Morton; History of Berks County]
Sponsors at bpt. were
Nicholas Handwerk and wife Albertina, who are both buried at the Fritz
Cemetery.
[Bierman, Guy L.,
NOTES] Johan Georg Gresh is buried at the Fritz Cemetery, but there is no
evidence to support the fact that Elizabeth is there as well. Elizabeth's death date is not known. As George died at age 56, there may have been
time for Elizabeth to remarry and be buried with a second spouse at another
location under a different sur-name.
The birth date of this
Johan Georg Gresh as recorded, by those who read the headstones at the Fritz
Cemetery, is 10-16-1767. This date
appears to be an error as Johan George
was baptized in 1765 at New Hanover Lutheran Church. A 10-16-1767 birth year for Johan Georg
conflicts with the birth date of his brother Johan Nicholas, born 6-24-
1767. The two dates are separated by
less than 4 months. For these reasons
the birth year of 1765, as recorded at the New Hanover Lutheran Church is
assumed to be correct.
Morton Montgomery in
his 1909 history of Berks County identifies 12 children of the second
generation Johan George and his wife
Elizabeth and also notes "a few more" not recalled, indicating that
there were at least 15 children. In
doing the research the son Jesse was identified and placed first by birth order
and second by a Jesse Gresh descendent, Mr. Steve Gresh of Colorado, formerly
of Washingtonville, PA. Steve Gresh was
advised by an older family member that Jesse's father was George from Berks
County. These two facts taken into
consideration, along with the known birthdates of Johan George's brothers
children and the fact that there was a five year gap between the known
birthdates of Johan George's children, lead me to believe Jesse was the son of
the second generation Johan George.
Other assumptions as
candidates for the remaining children,
presuming they were male, which is not confirmed, are:
1) David Gresh (b.11-21-1801 d. 9-24-1858) m. on
4-8-1828 at New Hanover Lutheran Church to Anna Dengler, reported daughter of
George and Christina (Luther) Dengler by Liz Miller another Gresh researcher.
2) Carl Gresh m. Rebecca Boyer on 3-23-1823 at
New Hanover Lutheran Church.
3) Daniel Gresh (b.1801) m. Susanna Kuser on
5-3-1827 at New Hanover Lutheran Church. Sponsors at bpt. were Nicholas
Handwerk and wife Albertina, who are both buried at the Fritz Cemetery.

Notes for *Elisabeth
Handwerk:
This connection
(daughter of Heinrich Handwerk is problematic as Elizabeth would have been near
60 at the birth of Aaron. This connection was made by other researchers and is
probably in error. Logic would presuppose that if George's wife, Elizabeth, was
a Handwerk, she would likely have been born circa 1770.
The 1800 census
records list George's wife aged 26-45 and in the same age group as George.
NOTE: Asterisk (*)
prior to the name denotes a possible connection from either a secondary source
without corroboration or a circumstantial connection. A verified connection
needs to be made to document or dispute this connection and there is not enough
available evidence to do so presently. The asterisk should be treated as
suspect data for establishing a connection or a particular set of facts
involving the person so designated.
