The three volume set
includes photocopies of the passenger lists [volume 2] with signatures and
although George Steinruck's name is difficult to read, it is evident that he
signed his own name rather than mark with an X. An interesting note is that two
other ships arrived at approximately the same time (the Francis and Elizabeth
and also the Rachel} but because there were so many sickly passengers on those
two ships, that the ships were partially quarantined until sick could be separated from the well.
The passenger manifest for the Phoenix includes a passenger, Johan Michel
Schmidte, identified as "Arzt" or physician.
Rupp, I. Daniel
"Thirty Thousand Names of Immigrants to Pennsylvania" Reprint of 1876
second edition, Philadelphia, PA lists the same ship passenger list with the
signature deciphered as: Joh. George Steinroth
A notice appearing in
Sower's newspaper January 16, 1754 mentions Georg Steinruck, New Hanover on the
manor land (McCall's Manor, now Douglas Township, Montgomery County).

The Douglas Township,
Montgomery County Tax Lists specifically state that the 100 acre property and
dwelling owned by George Steinrock was "sold to Christian Steinruck"
in 1797. Thereafter the same property is listed under Christian Steinruck until
1807 when it appears in Pottsgrove Township (Pottsgrove Township being formed
from parts of Douglas and New Hanover Townships). The property is listed in
Pottsgrove Township through 1822. In 1823 the property is listed under the
names of John and Samuel Steinmor [sic].
The Journal of David
Schultze, Surveyor, living in Upper Hanover Township contains two entries for
George Steinruck. David Schultze was a well known Colonial surveyor. An entry
in his joural dated October 31, 1774 is the following: "surveyed 40 acres
for George Steinruck" (p. 80) and "am to survey for George Steinruck
near manetawny..." (p. 82) from the Journals and Papers of David Schultze,
edited by Andrew S. Berky and published by the Schwenkfelder Library,
Pennsburg, PA, 1953. [NOTE: David Schultze mentions surveying a 40 acre tract
in 1774 for George Steinrock and Christian is listed with a forty acre tract in
tax lists from 1783 through 1789. Tax lists for the period before 1782 are not
available][NOTE: The Manatawny Creek runs in a north-south axis through the
westside of Pottstown and very near the Steinruck homestead]

A History of the Upper
Pottsgrove Township Steinruck Homestead, [by S. Duane Kauffman, 1411

Montgomery County Courthouse at Norristown were used.
The following deed is the key. Following
is an abstract:
516-378 JOHN STEINRUCK
ET AL TO JOHN WEILER, APRil 2, 1824
Between
John Steinruck and Samuel Steinruck both of Douglass Township, Berks County,
executors of the last will of Christian Steinruck late of Pottstown, parties of
the first part and John Weiler of Pottstown, the other part.
HISTORY OF PROPERTY TO THIS POINT
On March 26, 1761 the tract of 100
acres, 50 perches was granted by Samuel and Mary McCall of Philadelphia to
Joachim Godschalk.
On November 18, 1767 Joachim and
Elizabeth Godshalk granted the tract to George Steinruck.
On July 26, 1796 George and Anna
Steinruck granted the land to "their son, Christian Steinruck".
"Said Christian in his will of
March 1, 1820 instructed property to be sold by his executors, John Steinruck,
Samuel Steinruck, (sons) and Peter Moser (son-in-law). Moser renounced his
responsibility. Weiler paid $775.43 at the time of purchase and $1,066.67 to be
paid immediately after the decease of BARBARA, widow and relict of said Christian
Steinruck, to the heirs of said deceased".
DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY

At the present time [November 24, 1973]
the farm (100 acres still intact is occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Theis and
their son and daughter. (Address: Rt. 20, Pottstown). The house is very old. It
is in three parts. The oldest is log while the later additions are stone. The
exterior has been covered with stucco. The exterior is showing its age but the
interior is quite good and is well maintained. In my contact I found the Theis
family to be extremely amiable and cooperative! At present the property is used
as a large chicken farm.

Montgomery County
Atlas; G.M. Hopkins, Philadelpha, 1871 lists the above property under H.
Levengood in Pottsgrove Township. [John J Amtsfield]
Combination Atlas of Montgomery
County, J.D. Scott, Philadelphia 1877 lists the same property under H.
Levengood with 100 acres. [JJA]
The Property Atlas of
Montgomery County, J.L. Smith Co., Philadelphia 1893 lists the same property
under Caroline Y. Keyser with 102 acres. This atlas delineates the property
lines and is apparently the same as the map at the Montgomery County
Courthouse. {John J. Amtsfield]
[Berks County
Administrations, Orphans Court 4-164, March 26, 1792] The petition of
"George Hanselman, eldest son and heir of George Hanselman, late of the
Township of Douglass in this County, yeoman deceased, Setting forth that his
said father died intestate leaving a widow to wit Christina and issue Six
children to wit: the Petitioner, Rosina the wife of Henry Hauck, Anna Maria the
wife of Christian Zigler, Barbara the wife of Christian Stever [sic], Rachel
the wife of John Giley and Magdalena the wife of Christian Yorgy. And that the
said intestate died seized in his demesne as {
} of and in a certain messuage or
tenement and two contiguous tracts of land situate in Douglass Township
aforesaid one of them adjoining to land of William Brunner, Herman
Reiffschneider, GEORGE STEINROCK and Henry Yorgy containing fifty acres more or
less, the other adjoining the above tract, Bernard Honneter, Joseph Schweidel
and William Brunner containing twenty one acres and thirty three perches with
the appurtances and there for praying the Court to award and request to make
partition of the said messuage or tenement and two tracts of land...".
The Orphans Court ordered an evaluation of
the property by twelve honest citizens including which was done under authority
of the County Sheriff Philip Kremer. The citizens were: GEORGE GRESH, Berhard
Honnetter, John Nagle, John Keely, Solomon Roads, Jonathan Roths, Jacob Keely,
Daniel Reed, Henry Egle, Philip Levengood, Valentine Fisher and John Rohmich.
The valuation was determined to be two hundred and eighty pounds in gold or
silver money current in Pennsylvania. The panel determined that the property
could not be partitioned for fair distribution and George Hanselman presented
surety to guarantee payment of shares to all the heirs in two payments, the
first payment within twelve months and
the second payment due after the widow's death.
This is an important
document to secure and confirm George Steinruck's property location. George
Hanselman's land located solely in Berks County adjoined George Steinruck's
land located soley in Montgomery County. The obvious conclusion is that the two
properties straddled the Berks-Montgomery County Line which is, in fact,
accurate. Another interesting note is that some of the neighbors and members of
the panel to value George Hanselman's land are buried at the Fritz Burial
Ground in close proximity to the Hanselman and Steinruck properties. A third
interesting note is that Anna Barbara, George Hanselman's daughter and later
wife of Christian Steinruck, son of Johan George Steinruck were, in fact, next
door neighbors and in close proximity to George Gresh (who's daughter Salome
would later marry Christian and Anna Barbara Steinruck's son Samuel. {John

The evidence that
David's wife Was Dorothea Abendschon is circumstantial. Although I stongly
believe that Dorothea Steinruck was the daughter of Reinhold Abendschon, there
is no direct proof. The entire family disappeared after 1784 at about the same
time that David's brother, George and Madeline (Abendschon) Steinruck,
disappeared. Madeline was a sister of Dorothea and daughter of Reinhold
Abendschon. George later tunrs up in Ohio in 1806 listed as George Stonerock.

The record is unfortunate since it incorrectly lists the father as Christian
rather than Johan George or George. Confirmation records make clear that
Christian was the son of George.

Weiler paid $775.43 at the time of purchase and $1,066.67 to be
paid immediately after the decease of BARBARA, widow and relict of said
Christian Steinruck, to the heirs of said deceased".

At the present time [November 24, 1973]
the farm (100 acres still intact is occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Theis and
their son and daughter. (Address: Rt. 20, Pottstown). The house is very old. It
is in three parts. The oldest is log while the later additions are stone. The
exterior has been covered with stucco. The exterior is showing its age but the
interior is quite good and is well maintained. In my contact I found the Theis
family to be extremely amiable and cooperative! At present the property is used
as a large chicken farm.

The Douglas Township
Tax Lists specifically state that the 100 acre lot and dwelling owned by George
Steinrock was "sold to Christian Steinruck" in 1797. Thereafter the
same property is listed under Christian Steinruck until 1807 when it appears in
Pottsgrove Township (Pottsgrove Township being formed from parts of Douglas
Township). The property is listed in Pottsgrove Township through 1822. In 1823
the property is listed under the names of John and Samuel Steinmor [sic].
The Journal of David
Schultze, Surveyor living in Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery County,
contains two entries for George Steinruck. David Schultze was a well known
Colonial surveyor. An entry in his joural dated October 31, 1774 is the
following: "surveyed 40 acres for George Steinruck" (p. 80) and
"am to survey for George Steinruck near manetawny..." (p. 82) from
the Journals and Papers of David Schultze, edited by Andrew S. berky and
published by the Schwenkfelder Library, Pennsburg, PA, 1953. [NOTE: David
Schultze mentions surveying a 40 acre tract in 1774 for George Steinrock and
Christian is listed with a forty acre tract in tax lists from 1783 through
1789. Tax lists for the period before 1782 are not available][NOTE: The Manatawny
Creek runs in a north-south axis through the westside of Pottstown and very

John Steinruck and Mary. Josiah then granted the property to Isaac Steinrock of
Douglas Township (658-518). Isaac Steinrock then granted the property to
Charles Steinruck of Douglas Township (658-519). This is apparently the tract
that had been occupied by Christian Steinruck's widow, Anna Barbara.

A George Steinrock is
listed on muster roll of Captain Philip Hahn's Company December 22, 1778
Philadelphia County Militia. Absent on December 8, 1778. Listed as a Private.
This could apply to George Sr. who was located in Douglas Township,
Montgomery/Philadelphia County or to George Jr. who appeared in Douglass
Township, Berks County Taxables 1781-1786. My belief is that this entry applies
to George, Jr. since the militia company seems to be more Limerick/New Hanover
(Montgomery County) based and David Steinrock is also listed in the militia
roll.

Census; Earl Township, Lancaster County:
George Storick 1 male over 45; 2 males 16-26; 2 males 10 and under; 1
female 16-26; 1 female 10-16. (JJA note: This is a possibility that requires
further research and may or may not and probably does not apply. Census records
can be notoriously misleading based on spellings. Tax records and other
resources should be able to identify whether this is a Steinrock/Stonerock or a
variation of another name. Note that there are other possibilities of similar
name variations in Lancaster County. This entry is included only for further
research. There are similar names extant in Lancaster County in that time
period).
1800 Ohio Federal
Census: Ross County, Ohio: lists George Stonrock but the entry wasn't recorded
until approximately 1806 although I do not have access to the actual image.
1820 Ohio Federal
Census; Washington Township, Pickaway County, Ohio: George Stonerock 1 male over 45; 1 female
over 45.
[NOTE-JJA 10-16-2003] "Most researchers who are aware of
George Steinrock of Douglass Township, Berks County, PA and George Stonerock of
Ross County and Pickaway County, Ohio concede that the two are probably the
same person. Proving the connection is something that has eluded far better
researchers than I, John Amtsfield. Ohio researcher, Robert Stonerock, states
that there is a sixteen year gap where there is no record. In addition, on the
Pennsylvania side George's wife is purportedly Madeleine Abendshein (and the
1786 Dougalss Township, Berks County Tax rolls list him with probably one child
already), while on the Ohio side there is a later marriage record for George
Stonerock and Margaret Rienhart (Reinhart) in 1819.
I cannot locate George Steinrock or
Stonerock in the 1790 Census (father George is listed in Montgomery County) and
the 1800 census recording in Ohio was recorded in approximately 1806. Therefore
there is, as far as I can tell a gap of twenty years. There is some evidence
that they are the same person; although it is circumstantial. Bales Stonerock
does not appear in recognizable fashion in the census indices, yet a page by
page search of the 1850 Census for Deer Creek Township, Pickaway County clearly
shows Bales Stonerock, born in Virginia. I am not entirely sure what this entry
means, as these people seem to appear in 1850 and then disappear (normally a
clear indication of a spelling variation for an unrelated family); but, it
offers a potentially tantalizing tidbit of information. Unfortunately the 1790
and 1800 censuses for Virginia no longer exist. I also saw another indication
for a Stonerock that indicated his paternal grandfather was born in Maryland.
Suggested possibilites for further research, particularly tax records, but
also, deed, probate and church records are in West Virginia (which was a part
of Virginia prior to the Civil War between the States), Maryland and/or
Virginia.
Information and data available to me
indicates that there is no conclusive record of George between 1786 and
1806. However, all recognizable
Steinruck-Stonerock name variations prior to 1850 seem to derive from one
immigrant only . Other Steinruck/Steinrock immigrants from Germany do not start
showing up until at least 1850 and the earliest immigrants do not seem to be
with families and are at least middle aged.
Also note that the children listed are
circumstantially related. There is no current evidence to suggest that all of
these Stonerocks are directly related to George. I may believe that they are,
but I cannot prove it. John J.

" I will give you as much
information as I can with my authorities.
What first made me take such interest was finding an old account book of
Samuel Abendschein's, the oldest son of Rheinholt, his executor and the
guardian of Jacob, and some of the other children. This Samuel moved to Virginia and was a
brother of my great-grandfather Philip, and of your ancestor Jacob, who was the
youngest child. Descendants of this
Samuel had many papers, which he owned as executor of his father's estate, some
referring to his will and this old account book that I have is full of the
expenses of Jacob, George, & Rheinholt (minors). Then, I have gotten much information from the
Pennsylvania Archives. ... We have all the names of the Rheinholt's sons: Samuel, Philip, George, Rheinholt &
Jacob, & of some of his daughters, Phoebe, Margarethe, who married John
Lessel [Leffel], Magdalena, who married George Steinrock (all of Sharpsboro,
Washington Co., Pa. in 1787), Elina, Hannah, Philippina and Nancy. My Uncle Col. Obenchain told me of those old
papers but they had been burned up in a fire and he could not remember what
they were. Do you remember any others,
except that inventory? That must have
been an inventory of Rheinholt's estate, as my uncle got those papers from a
descendant of Samuel, the executor."

SUMMARY OF DAVID
STAINROOK LISTINGS IN PHILADELPHIA CITY DIRECTORY
The earliest Stainrook listing is
David. In 1809 and 1810 the name is
spelled Steinrock and in 1811 it is Stayrook.
After that it is rendered Stainrook.
In the beginning his address is 50 Brewer's Alley. In 1813 the listing is for a Stainrook and
Thomas with a shop on Old York Road and 4th Street. In that year his residence is 42 Brewer's
Alley and he is identified as a "smith.'
In 1819 his shop is given as 26 Old York Road. (This may be a different rendering of the
same place as before.) This continues
until the mid thirties. From 1821
through 1830 his residence is the corner of Callowhill and Crown and from 1831
to 1846 his address is 131 North 4th Street.
From 1836 to 11846 he is listed as operating a tavern or hotel. In 1847 he is not listed. In 1848 and 1849 (the last years he is
listed) he had a store at 23 and 25 Magnolia Street.
In 1837 a second David Stainrook
shows. The new one is called a waterman
and his residence is David Court. In
1839 he is identified as a blacksmith.
In 1840 he is called a scale beam maker. In 1844 the term
"Junior" is used to differentiate him from the other David. He is a blacksmith in 1844 but from 1846 to
1851 he had a tavern at Buttonwood & 5th.
In 1851 his residence is given as Pleasant above 10th. There is a 1852 blacksmith David Stainrook at
Barclay above Broad which could be either one.
No David Stainrook is listed after 1852.
In summary, one David Stainrook is
listed from 1809 till 1836. From 1837
through 1849 two are given. In 1850 and
1851 only David Junior shows. In 1852
one is listed as a blacksmith with a new address that could be either. From 1844 to 1851 one is designated Junior,
but by using the addresses the distinction can be made from the time they both
appeared. From the listings it is clear
that both David Stainrooks moved around geographically and occupationally. Both switched back and forth from
blacksmithing and operating a hotel/tavern.

Notes for Anna Maria
Steinruck:
There is a Mary Ann
Stinerook listed in the 1830 Census in Brunswick, Schuylkill County aged
between 50-60 with a male aged 30-40. Although there is little evidence to
support the conclusion that the entry applies to Anna Maria Steinruck; it is a
logical and possible connection. More research into local records, etc is
necessary to confirm this supposition.
1840 PA Federal
Census; Orwigsburg, Schuylkill County, PA:
Widow Steinrock aged 60-70; 1
male 40-50; 1 female aged 20-30.
To further add to the
mystery there is a Mary A Steinruck aged 78 listed as a domestic in the 1860
census for Londonderry Township, Dauphin County in the household of John Booser
aged 31, wife Levinia aged 32; Jacob aged 9; Sarah aged 7; Mary aged 4; Anne

sold to Horst two pieces of linen, one bed and bedstead, one lot of yarn, one
pair of andirons, two shoals (sic), two coverlets, two quilts, one pair of
candlesticks, one iron kettle, one table, two tubs and stands, one small brass
kettle, to have and to hold. Witnessed
by Lewis Yertey, William Steinruck, and Martin Horst. (It looks like Christian had to deal with
indebtedness in this manner.) Christian

Family tradition holds
that Samuel was the Lutheran School teacher in Boyertown.
Gravestones located
between the Good Shepherd UCC church and the Bank property as part of the Old
Union Cemetery in Boyertown, were reinterred when both the Bank and the church
expanded. The gravestones were mounted all together in rows. Samuel's
gravestone is somewhat problematic as it contains the death date for Samuel Sr.
(May 17, 1836) interposed with the birth date for Samuel Jr (September 25,
1819) which creates the illusion that a 17 year old Samuel Steinruck was buried
there. There is no such Samuel Steinruck. Which Samuel, then was buried at the
Old Union Cemetery in Boyertown? Logic would dictate that when burying a man,
the death date would likely be correct and would apply for the person being
buried and that they would have the correct date for the correct person being
buried.
In this case, however,
Samuel Steinruck, Jr. died in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA August 20, 1859.

In 1848 and 1849 (the last years he is listed)
he had a store at 23 and 25 Magnolia Street.

In affidavits filed
for Civil War pension wherein most of the work was done by Emil and Sevilla
Ose, Elizabeth stated that she and John were married 5-2-1838 by Rev. Conrad
Miller in Boyertown. At the time the widow's pension was applied for she lived
with Emil and Sevilla Ose at 2971 Lawrence St., Philadelphia, PA and she also
lived for a time with Willoughby Steinruck at 1341 Seltzer St., Philadelphia,
PA.
John was advanced in
age at the time he enlisted in the army in 1862. He contracted a fever (described
as typhoid by medical experts but for which he described as
"malarial") while on guard duty between Sharpsburg and New Berlin,
Maryland. He was left sick on October 30, 1862 and hospitalized through
November and into December when he was given a medical discharge. Apparently he
was severely weakened and had to be carried from coach into home according to
several affidavits in the pension file. He recovered very slowly and from then
on had a frail constitution. He is described in 1898 as being 5 foot, 6 1/2
inches, with a dark complexion, gray hair and gray eyes. On October 8, 1898,
Elizabeth Steinruck was granted a widow's pension of $8 per month retroactive
to March 6, 1898.

BOROUGH OF
McEWENSVILLE.
The first person to
locate at the present site of McEwensville was John Quigley, a plowmaker and
carpenter, who sold his property early in
the present century to
a Mr. Stahlnecker and moved farther up the Warrior Run valley. Alexander
McEwen, a Scotchman by descent, a weaver by trade, and a soldier in the war of
18l2 whence he derived the title of captain, opened the first store and was the
first postmaster.
William Moritz
established the first public house, and, with these early improvements as a
nucleus, the place rapidly attained village
proportions. In 1825 Adam Sarver laid out a number of
lots, which were rapidly sold, and, as a large increase in the population was
anticipated, the name
became an important subject of consideration.
Prior to that time the place had been known as Pine Grove, from the
prevailing variety of
timber in the vicinity; the present name was formally conferred at a supper
given by Captain McEwen on the 28th of
October, 1825, to
Brigadier General Adam Light, Lieutenant Colonel James S. Dougal, Majors John
Montgomery and Robert H. Hammond, Captains Anthony Armstrong, of the
Northumberland Troop of Horse, Henry Frick, of the Milton Guards, William
Fulkerson, of the Warrior Run Infantry, Jackson McFadden, of the Lewisburg
Guards, James Finney, of the Union Guards, John Ludwig, of the Lafayette
Artillerists, and other officers of a battalion of militia encamped for review
at Camp Calhoun. The following account
appeared in the Miltonian of November 5, 1825:-
After the review of the Independent
Battalion of Volunteers on the 28th of October Captain Alexander McEwen invited
Brigadier General Light and his staff, the field officers of the battalion, and
several respectable citizens then on a visit to the camp to partake of a dinner
with him. After much conversation it was
observed that a new town was about to be laid out in the vicinity of the camp
ground, and the inquiry arose, What was the town to be named? No one could tell, but we think the following
sentiment, given as a volunteer toast by General Light, will he sufficiently
indicative of what it ought to be called.
The toast was loudly and most heartily applauded by the company.
By Brigadier General Light "May we
shortly have the satisfaction of seeing
a new and flourishing village situated in the immediate vicinity of Camp
Calhoun, and may it be appropriately named McEwensville."
By Captain Frick--" The town plot
just laid out by Adam Sarver - let the blank he filled with McEwensville, and
may the town increase with the exactness, neatness, and rapidity of Camp
Calhoun, and vie with her more flourishing neighbors, Milton and
Pennsborough!"
There was for some years a healthful and
normal expansion of the village in size, population, and business importance,
but with the opening of the Philadelphia and Erie railroad and consequent
growth of Watsontown the prestige of McEwensville began to decline. This was particularly noticeable in the decade
ending with 1870. In recent years the
borough has derived a renewed impetus from the opening of the Wilkesbarre and
Western railroad; it has now some half-dozen stores, a hotel, three
manufacturing establishments, four churches, a school building, and a
postoffice. A fertile and populous
farming region surrounds the town, giving stability and permanence to its
business and other interests.
Local Industries.- A. Mauser & Brother's carriage works were
established in 1839 by William Hood, who built a frame shop forty feet square
on the west side of Main street. In 1848
he moved this building back from the street and
erected in front of it a two-story frame
structure forty by
forty-four feet; he also built a brick blacksmith shop on the opposite side of
the street. In 1870 Mr. Hood disposed of
the establishment to
Alem Mauser, and in 1875 the present firm was formed with Cain Mauser as junior
member. They employ fifteen men and
manufacture a large amount of new work.
C. Gearhart & Brother's foundry is
operated in a building erected in 1840 by Stitzel & Housel. It is a brick structure sixty by thirty
feet, one story in
height. From the original proprietors
the establishment passed to J. P. Hackenberg, and during his ownership it
was rented by other
parties. It then became the property of
PHILIP STEINRUCK, and after his retirement in 1865 the foundry was operated two
years by William Stitzel. Samuel Grey
was the next owner; he sold it in 1875 to C. Mentzel, who was succeeded by the
present proprietors in 1887.
The Excelsior Wagon Works were erected
in 1868 by E. Everitt & Company, who were succeeded in March, 1882, by John
W. Kerr, the present owner. The plant
was first used as an agricultural implement manufactory. Mr. Kerr introduced the necessary appliances
for the manufacture of extension table slides, land rollers, bobb sleds, etc.,
and added engines, blacksmith shop, warehouse, and circular saw mill to the
plant. W I Rothermel was associated in the business in 1886, but since his retirement
Mr. Kerr has continued the business individually. The works were destroyed by fire on the 1st
of June, 1889, but have been rebuilt.
Children's express wagons, farm wagons, etc., are manufactured.
Borough Organization.- Legal proceedings for the incorporation of
McEwensville as a borough were instituted on the 7th of November, 1857, when a
petition with that object in view was presented to the county court of quarter
sessions. The grand jury, through
Stephen Bittenbender, foreman, having certified to the expediency of granting
it, the borough was forthwith incorporated by decree of court, November 7,
1857. The first election under the new
regime was held on the 14th of December, 1857, and resulted as follows:
burgess, John F. Dentler; council: John Boush, George Piper, F. H Carver, Henry
Hartranft, William Hood; school directors: George A. Dixon, William Sample,
John Boyer, J. T. Williams, F. D. Yeomans, William B. Irvin; overseers of the
poor: Daniel Gold, William Beard; inspectors: William F. Kreigh, E. F. Gold;
assessor, Andrew J. Guffy; judge of elections, George Piper; justice of the
peace, PHILIP STEINRUCK.
