4. JOHN3 MAYBERRY (*SYLVANUS2, WILLIAM1 MAYBURY)9
was born 1732, and died 11 Feb 1812. He
married HANNA LUCKEN 02 Aug 1760 in Philadelphia, PA, daughter of JOSEPH LUKEN.
Notes for JOHN MAYBERRY:
Records of Zion
Lutheran (Old Organ) Church, East Pikeland Township, Chester County, PA record
his death on February 11, 1812 stating that he was born in 1732, son of Tillwan
and Catharina Meberri. He married Hanna Lucken and had 6 sons and 7 daughters,
3 daughters survive him. He died of old age. Although no other records reative
to Sylvanus or any other Mayberry are located in the records of Old Organ
Church, the burial record is not unusual or surprising. Old Organ Church is
located south of Pottstown in Chester County and was served by ministers who
essentially rode a circuit, serving numerous other churches in the same
vicinity. The other chruches would include New Hanover, Pottstown,
Goshenhoppen, etc. Oftentimes records would be recorded that apply to another
congregation and, in fact, there is at least one other important Old Organ
burial record that would likely have taken place at either Emmanuel Lutheran in
Pottstown or New Hanover Lutheran for Christian Steinruck.
"Tillwan" is an obvious
mispelling that occurs frequently when locating English names in German
records. It is a fairly obvious german phonetic speling of an English name.
Consider that the w is pronounced as a v.
Additionally, church records are very
spare for early Mayberrys's either because some were Quaker in a locale that
was predominantly German Reofromes or German Lutheran or simply because of
their english ancestry in an area that was predominantly German. Several
possibilities exist; either they attended german church services and names were
so mangled that they are unrecognizable (remote), they attended their own
services or utilized itinerant preachers ( there is some evidence of this) or
they simply did not attend organized religuous services.
The marriage record of John Mayberry and
Hanna Lucken is a circumstantial indication that John was the son of Silvanus
as Silvanus attended the ceremony and is listed as a witness.

January 15, 1900]
Joseph Mayberry's
burial record is found in the records of Falkner Swamp Reformed Church where
his burial is listed at Leidig's burial ground. No record of a tombstone has
been located.
1790 PA Census,
Montgomery County, Remainder of the County, p. 161: Joseph Maybury 1 male over
16 years; 5 males under 16 years; 4 females.
Joseph's wife's name
comes from Falkner Swamp Church records where she is listed as Anna and also
deed records in Montgomery County. She is listed in widow's Revolutionary War
pension account in the Perkiomen Region as Nancy. In Berks County Death record
for son William (mother listed as Anne Kaator-likely a corruption of
Krater-Krider-Kreuter or Grater although she does not fit with any known Krider
families). Nancy is a common familiar nickname in contemporary
Pennsylvania-German families for Anne or Anna. (Note by JJAmtsfield)
