Descendants of *Michael (Johan Michael) Krider Generation No. 1 1. *Michael (Johan Michael)2 Krider (Hans Jacob1)1,2,3,4 was born 1712 in Ittlingen, Germany, and died Jul 1761 in Hatfield Township, Montgomery County, PA. He married Catharine. Notes for *Michael (Johan Michael) Krider: NOTE: Asterisk (*) prior to the name denotes a possible connection from either a secondary source without corroboration or a circumstantial connection. A verified connection needs to be made to document or dispute this connection and there is not enough available evidence to do so presently. The asterisk should be treated as suspect data for establishing a connection or a particular set of facts involving the person so designated. Placement in the lineage at this point is sheer speculation until further documentation places him with assurance. He goes with this general family. Rebecca L. Blackwell, "Descendants of John Michael Krider of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania: Crider Famlies of Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee", 1991, Heritage Books , Bowie, MD. "Michael Krider, age 20, arrived in Philadelphia on August 11, 1732 aboard the ship "Samuel" from Rotterdam. He signed his name in longhand on the ship's register, indicating he was an educated man..." "On the ship Loyal Judith" of London also from Holland, Peter (45) and Johannes (37) Kreider arrived in Philadelphia. They settled near Michael in Perkiomen/Skippack Township, Philadelphia County, indicating they were possbily relatives. Emigration records indicate that Michael was from the Palinate Region of Germany..." "Michael became a blacksmith and the owner of a grist mill in Hatfield Township, Philadelphia County (late Montgomery County) near the Bucks County Line. On March 7, 1734, he signed a road petition in Hanover Township; his signature matches that shown on the ships's register" [from the Samuel on August 11, 1732]. [This is of significance because some researchers claim that Michael settled in Lancaster County. The matching signatures clearly establish that the Michael who came over on the "Samuel" in 1732 is the same Michael who settled in Montgomery County-JJAmtsfield note] "In 1743 a Michael Krider of Philadelphia County "scrupled to take the Oath" of citizenship..." "In 1748 Michael Krider bought 73 acres of land in Hatfield Township from Jacob Weirman, a German Mennonite. This land was bounded by the properties of Rudolph Lapp, the late Richard Davis, David Evans, Henry Shooter and Michael Weirman. Two years later, Michael purchased another tract of 21 acres, as well as one acre from neighbor Rudolph Lapp. On January 16, 1753, Michael purchased 100 acres of land in Upper Salford Township from Frederick Hertzog." "September 15, 1753, Michael Krauter attended the Lord's Supper at Indian Field Lutheran Church in Franconia Township. On October 14, servants of Michael Krauter named Barbara Gerhardt and Maria Barbara Conrad attended confession at the same church..." "March 6, 1758, the Honorable Justices of the Court of Quarter Sessions held at Philadelphia appointed a judicious set of men to view and lay out a road to begin in the Bucks County line near John Benner's Plantation, thence by the Presbyterian Meeting House (the Indian Creek Reformed Church Michael attedned), and the Lutheran Church to Michael Croyder's Grist Mill. Michael signed this paper as one of the members of the jury appointed to lay out the road (Bulletin of the Historical Society of Montgomery County, Volume 8, No 3, October 1983), mentions tha laying of this road and questions..."Why they wanted to get to Croyder's Mill up on the Ridge Valley Creek remains a mystery.....the court argreed to lay out such a road, and on the 9th and 10th of May it was surveyed and marked." "However, at the Quarter Sessions held June 5, 1758, a petition was filed by the subscribers and Inhabitants of Franconia and Salford Townships complaining that the road was laid out through their plantations and woodlands and will be of very little public use but chiefly for the Convenience of one of a few private persons. They requested another jury be appointed to review the laying of the road. Accordingly, some changes were made to the road, running along the county line for a longer distance to avoid cutting through Benner and Hunsberger's land." "No marriage record has been found to date, but we know Michael's wife was Catherine for she is mentioned in the baptismal records for several of their children. Their youngest child, David, was baptized along with their grandchild, John Jacob, son of John and Mary Barbara Krider. Catherine must have been in her early forties when David was born." "Michael Krider, blacksmith, wrote his will July 7, 1761, in Hatfield Township. He mentions wife Catherine, children John, Jacob, Abraham, Daniel, Catherine, Magdalena and David. Son Abraham received "all that plantation or tract of land Conveyed to me in two parcels by Jacob Wierman situated in Hatfiled afroesaid conatining one hundred acres of land, by the asme more or less...after he is arrived at the age of 21 years." When Abraham acquired his property, he was to pay the sum of 105 pounds to the younger children in a similar manner to that set up for John. Son Daniel was bequeathed "all that part of tract of land situated in Upper Salford adjoining to the land hereby granted to my son John Containing seventy four acres of land, be it more or less, twenty four which were conveyed to me by the honourable proprietor...after he is arrived at the age of 21 years." Notes for John (John Jacob) Krider: Perkiomen Region, Volume 1, page 26 contains reference to the Journal of David Shultze, colonial surveyor in the Perkiomen Valley. In his journal are entries: February 1769 on the "3rd [surveyed for] John Kryder and Yost" "the 8th for John Kryder, finished survey." on the "6th, 7th and 9th-their drafts made" From the Bulletin of the Historical Society of Montgomery COunty, Vol VI, October 1947-April 1949, pages 228-236: SALFORD FORGE 1768 to 1810 The Swedish visitor, Hermeling, writing in 1783, compiled a list of "Bar Iron Hammers in Pennsylvania," including the following intriquing reference: Moyberry's [Mayburry's Green Lane Forge] hammer at Perlong [Perkiomen] Creek and one [hammer] four miles below at the same stream-200 tons." (Annual production). {S.G. Hermelin, Report about the Mines in the United States of America, 1783, p.73). Further investigation reveals that a "Salford Forge" was listed by Samuel Potts (presumeably in 1793) next to Green Lane Forge (from Theodore W. Bean, Ed, History of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, 1884, p.563). This juxtaposition of names would not be significant, if Hermelin's hammer had not been located just below Green Lane. References to Salford Forge in secondary sources are very brief, revealing almost nothing of its history or location. One reliable authority states only that it was built in 1771 and was located in Montgomery County. Acting on the premise that a "Salford Forge: would quite probably have been located in one of three Salford Townships, the writer examined possible forge sites, working up the Perkiomen from Salford Station. At Kratz's Dam, about three miles below the site of Green Lane Forge, specimens of soft iron with infused charcoal were found near the foundation of an old grist mill. This indicated the location of the forgotten Salford Forge, but confirmation was made by tracing the present owner's title back to the original proporietary grant. The earliest recorded deed relates that on July 28, 1770, the proprietors granted John Cryder (alias Krider) and his wife, Mary Barbara, 72 acres comprising"...the Forge tract in Upper Salford Township on the east bank of the Perkiomen..." This same deed, indentured in 1779, further identifies the property as follows, "Together with the Forge for making of Bar Iron thereon erected and built..." Many maps were examined by the writer in an effort to confirm the location of Salford Forge. A map of 1792 drawn by Reading Howell and inscribed to Governor Thomas Mifflin locates the forge in the general area of Kratz's Dam. This fact, in conjunction with the forge refuse uncovered and the deed statement unquestionably locates the site of Salford Forge. There is proof, too, that Salford Forge was in existence before 1771, the year given for its origin by at least two sources. A very informative manuscript consisting of a ledger for Salford Store, covering the years 1766 to 1774 lists John Krider's account as beginning on January 20, 1767. The storekeeper, Michael Croll, evidently transported some of John Krider's iron to Philadelphia, for the ledger contains this entry under the date line, July 21, 1768: "John Krider, dr Carriage of 1 Tun Iron to Philadelphia-one pound, five shillings." This establishes the Forge as being in operation as early as 1768: moreover, it is listed in the Upper Salford Township Assessments for 1769, the earliest year for which such records are available. The story of Salford Forge which follows is derived mainly from the assessment records and reference to the appended table will be found helpful in supplementing this commentary. Scant information exists concerning John Krider and his Salford Forge during the years 1770 to 1773. He paid his bill at the Salford Store on July 8, 1771, although his account was not completely settled until January 15, 1776. The assessment records for 1773 value his property at thirty pounds and show his tax as seven shillings, six pence. It was in this year that a famous ironmaster named Robert Coleman rented Salford Forge. Robert Coleman had come to America from Ireland in 1764 when he was but sixteen years old. Working under Peter Grubb at Hopewell Forge for six months, and next under James Old at Quitapahilla Forge, Speedwell Forge and Reading Furnace, he rose rapidly in the iron industry. On October 3, 1773, he married Ann Old, daughter of his employer and soon after that he rented Salford Forge for a period of three years. A rare document, quoted by Swank, was entitled "Robert Coleman's memorial presented August 26th. 1776, asking persmission for his clerk and three forgemen to be exempted from marching with the Army to Amboy." It represented Robert Coleman as an officer in Colonel Pott's battalion, who was then on his march to Amboy; that he had rented a forge (Salford Forge) for three years at a rental of "two hundred a year", the lease of which would expire in three months. It further stated that the "principal part" of his workmen were Associators, who, if obliged to march with the militia, would cause him great loss and entirely prevent him from working up his stock in hand. Swank informs us that Coleman's request was granted the same day by the Council of Safety to whom it was adressed. While at Salford Forge, Coleman manufactured chain bars designed to span the Delaware River in the defense of Philadelphia against British ships. An interesting letter addressed to Coleman on October 11, 1776, by the Council of Safety, stresses the urgency of forging these bars: The Council of Safety for the State of Pennsylvania earnestly request you to lay aside all other business, that you may dispatch the Large chain bars wch Mr. Peter Brown of this city has bespoke of you....Your compliance will greatly promote the public Service....Please to send down immeidately such parts as our [sic] done. This is the only instance so far discovered in which a Perkiomen Valley iron works directly supplied requisitioned articles of defense during the Revolution. Robert Coleman removed to Elizabeth Furnace, Lancaster County, when his lease expired in December, 1776, and he rose to great prominence in the iron industry before his retirement in 1809. He died on August 14, 1825, at the age of seventy-seven. Although the records are not complete for the Revolutionary War years, it is presumed that John Krider operated the forge from 1776 to 1779, since he is assessed for the property in the latter year. On June 24, 1779, John Krider and his wife, Mary Barbara, granted the 72 acres, forge and dwelling to William Bird of Reading, Pennsylvania. Bird, on October 9 of the same year, sold the property to John Patton, of Heidelberg Township, Berks County, and Samuel Moore of Reading, Pennsylvania, for a consideration of 20,000 pounds. This last transaction was made subject to a yearly quitrent of "...one half penny Sterling per acre for the whole of said tract now due and hereafter to become due and payable to the Chief Lord of Lords of the fee thereof and the said William Bird." The high cost of 20,000 pounds for the property must be interpreted in light of the inflated money values for 1779. By contrast, the property is given a total assessment of 1,545 pounds in 1781, only two years later. From the assessment records it can be seen that Samuel Moore was heavily assessed for the forge (6,000 pounds) in 1780, sustaining a tax of 348 pounds. John Patton did not share in this heavy assessment, by far the largest for the township. It will be noted that the forge property has increased to 420 acres. In 1781 a Colonel Thomas Edwards was listed as "Ironmaster" and was assessed for the forge property then including only 375 acres. In that year John Swiceford, John Goucher, and Fred Alan Clay were listed as forgemen, bearing occupation taxes of 35, 55 and 55 pounds respectively. Richard Patton, probably a relative of John Patton, is listed as "forgeman" in 1783, The itemized assessment on the Salford Forge property for that year is interesting: Richard Patton {assessed value in pounds] 120 acres and Dwelling 360 300 acres Rockland 300 1 Forge 500 10 Horses 145 4 cows 16 1 servant 10 2 negroes 145 3 Oz Plate 1 Occupation 80 Total.....1557 Colonel John Patton, one of the co-purchasers of the Salford Forge property in 1779, was assessed for the forge in the period from 1785 to 1789. Like Robert Coleman, he was a Revolutionary War officer, elected Colonel of the Fifth Battalion of Associators from Berks County. Also, like Coleman, he married into a famous ironmaster's family when he took the widow of William Bird for his wife in 1762. In this way he became part owner of Roxborough Furnace, later Berkshire Furnace, in Heidelberg Township, Berks County. Assessment figures for the Salford Forge property during the years of John Patton's term as ironmaster there indicate an active forge. In 1785, the forgemen are listed as William Cotter, Andrew Loreman and William Mills, each sustaining an occupation tax of fifty pounds. A possible source of pig iron for the Salford Forge was Berkshire Furnace, in which Patton had an interest. In March, 1788, John Patton, was billed for 45 tons of pig iron at seven pounds 10 shillings per ton at this furnace." [The forge changed hand several more times inlcuing George Ege, James Old, Micale Zigler, John Richards, Jolly, Matthias Richards and Jospeh Weaver and was in operation through 1810] ".....Throughout the 42 years of Salford Forge's known history at least eleven different forge masters shared its management. Genrally, as lessees of the forge, they were responsible for the payment of taxes on the forge property. It can be justly concluded that probably no iron work in the Perkiomen Valley saw the presence of so many distinquished ironmasters and Revolutionary personages as did Salford Forge. "Although the records are not complete for the Revolutionary War years, it is presumed that John Krider operated the forge from 1776 to 1779, since he is assessed for the property in the latter year. On June 24, 1779, John Krider and his wife, Mary barbara, granted the 72 acres, forge, and dwelling to William Bird. Bird, on October 9 of the same year, sold the property to John Patton, of Heidelberg Township, Berks County, and Samuel Moore of Reading, Pennsylvania, for a consideration of 20,000 pounds..." [Gemmell, Alfred, Charcoal Iron Industry in the Perkiomen Valley, Hartenstine Printing House, Norristown, PA 1949] MISCELLANEOUS IRON WORKS IN THE AREA OF SALFORD FORGE- DANIEL KRIDER'S "HAMMER" LISTED IN 1785 Daniel Krider, brother of John Krider, the founder of Salford Forge was credited with the following property in the Marlborough Township assessments for 1785 Daniel Krider {assessed value in punds] 62 acres and Dwelling 124 1 small hammer 25 2 horses 1 cow 1 hemp mill 100 abated 25 pounds.........total...249 pounds This mention of "1 small hammer" doubtless refers to a tilt hammer (or plating mill) at which bar iron from the forges was hammered into sheet iron or tin-plate iron. A review of the available assessment records revealed that Daniel Krider did not own a hammer in 1783, nor was it in existence in 1786. It would appear, therefore, that this small industry was of short duration-two years at the most. Sources: 1. John Krider (spelled Kreyder) made application for a survey of a fifty acre tract in Upper Salford Township, then Philadelphia County and now located in Montgomery County on March 25, 1766 (Application # ES-1370). This tract adjoined the lands of Henry Dietz, Sebastian Hayb, Henry Kipple and Deeter Welgar. Apparently although a patent was issued, it was not returned until February 26, 1808 for the warrant. A warrant is in effect, first title and the original deed for a property direct from the Proprietors. The Original survey is dated March 23, 1766 (A-52-296) Will of Michael Krider, July 1761. JB Tilden John (X) Cryder {SEAL} [Signed by his X mark] [NOTE] I am puzzled by the records for both Abraham and Maria Barbara, neither of whom appear in John Krider's will. Both records are from St. Paul's Six-Corner Church also commonly called New Goshenhoppen Lutheran. Both clearly refer to parents as John and Maria Barbara. I am suspicious of the connection and although there are a number of John Kriders in that time period, I know of no others in that period of time married to a Maria Barbara. It is a conundrum and although I suspect that Abraham and Maria Barbara may connect elsewhere, I will leave them be for the time being until I can locate additional documentation that will enable me to sort them out properly. He married Catharina Berger, daughter of Johannes Nicholas Berger. She died 01 Feb 1839. Notes for Daniel Krider: MISCELLANEOUS IRON WORKS IN THE AREA OF SALFORD FORGE-DANIEL KRIDER'S "HAMMER" LISTED IN 1785 Daniel Krider, brother of John Krider, the founder of Salford Forge was credited with the following property in the Marlborough Township assessments for 1785 Daniel Krider {assessed value in punds] 62 acres and Dwelling 124 1 small hammer 25 2 horses 1 cow 1 hemp mill 100 abated 25 pounds.........total...249 pounds This mention of "1 small hammer" doubtless refers to a tilt hammer (or plating mill) at which bar iron from the forges was hammered into sheet iron or tin-plate iron. A review of the available assessment records revealed that Daniel Krider did not own a hammer in 1783, nor was it in existence in 1786. It would appear, therefore, that this small industry was of short duration-two years at the most. "Michael Krider, blacksmith, wrote his will July 7, 1761, in Hatfield Township. He mentions wife Catherine, children John, Jacob, Abraham, Daniel, Catherine, Magdalena and David. "Loving wife Catherine" received "our matrimonial bed and furniture. Cows and one third part pf my personal estate." Oldest son, John, all that one hundred acres of land situated in Upper Salford Township which I bought of Frederick Hertzog...together with all...the improvements Grist Mill and Saw Mill on the said 100 acres of land. In return John was to pay the sum of 200 pounds to all my other children. Michael specified exactly what amount was to be paid on each of several dates for nine years following his death'...without any Interest provided he payeth his said payments at the hereby fixed times.". Son Daniel was bequeathed "all that part of tract of land situated in Upper Salford adjoining to the land hereby granted to my son John Containing seventy four acres of land, be it more or less, twenty four which were conveyed to me by the honourable proprietor...after he is arrived at the age of 21 years." He was also to pay the "arrears due" the proprietor. Son Jacob, which is absconded from me if he happens to return again (is bequeathed) the sum of fifty pounds. Daughters Catherine and Magdalena were willed 100 pounds each to be received "after they have attained the age of 18 years." :Youngest child David" was also to receive 100 pounds to be "paid to him at his lawfil age." He willed that his wife was to "continue the housekeeping on the improvement whereon I now dwell with the children under age as long as she pleaseth but if she happened to marry again or in case of her death the said improvements and all the stock and household goods shall be sold by Publick Sale and moneys gott by said sale shall be divided...Michael also bequeathed money to the "Poor of the Province" The will was proved August 1, 1761, indicating that he died in the month of July at the age of 49. Daniel Krider and wife Catharine appeared as sponsors at Old Goshenhoppen on March 17, 1782 for the baptism of Daniel Schied, son of Georg and Anna Maria Scheid born December 31, 1781 and again on May 11, 1783 for the baptism of Daniel Scheid, son of Christian and Maria Elisabeth Scheid born February 17, 1783. At one point the stones were located on the north side of the church (opposite the road) but when an addition was made to the church, the graves were reinterred and the gravestones on that side of the church were removed and later placed in rows at the back of the cemetery. Both Philip's and Sarah's gravestones are located in the first row of the tombstones that were moved. Interestingly enough the tombstones for Christopher Scheffy and Catherine Roshon are enclosed in a small picket fence covered with a canopy in the middle of the church playground. Notes for Isaac Roshon: Abraham Bertolet kept a journal where he recorded daily events and observations primarily weather from 1831 to 1857 but he sometimes included events. In 1847 on April 27 he noted "...the first ears of Rye this year." He then mentioned that "...Isaac Roshon emigrated to Ohio." This reference could apply to Isaac Jr, but more than likely fits Isaac, Sr. better. Both Isaacs eventually ended up in Ohio. Isaac Roshon appears in Limerick Township Tax lists in 1843 with 32 acres, a dwelling, 1 horse and 2 cows. He is listed through the Spring of 1844 when his entry with 32 acres is crossed out. This army having been transferred to the Department of the Cumberland, as a reserve Corp, the Nineteenth moved with the Brigade to Nashville, where it arrived on February 7th., proceeding thence to Franklin. On the 4th. of March, with 600 cavalry and 200 additional infantry, it took part with its Brigade in a reconnaissance in force. After a march of 4 miles, skirmishing commenced with Confederate scouts and advanced pickets, but with the southerners retiring, the Brigade encamped, the Nineteenth having lost one man wounded in the skirmishing. The march having been resumed on the following day, the Confederates were met in force at Thompkin's Station, nine miles from Franklin. The Nineteenth, with others, fight stubbornly against immense odds, attack after attack is repulsed, struggling nobly without hope, defeat and capture inevitable, they surrender: the Colonel offers his sword; it is refused; the Confederate commander says, "An officer so brave, with a Regiment so gallant, deserves to keep his sword." This was a very sanguinary engagement. At times the contest was severe and the fighting terrific. Three charges were made by the South and gallantly repulsed. In one charge the Nineteenth captures the colors of the 4th. Mississippi and several prisoners. After an engagement of five hours their ammunition became exhausted, and the entire force surrendered, excepting a few, who succeeded in making their escape. The rebel force proved to be the entire cavalry of General Bragg's army, 18,000 strong under the command of General Van Dorn. The Nineteenth went into action with 512 officers and men, of which number 113 were killed and wounded. Those of the Regiment that had escaped, also those that were left behind in Franklin, were sent to Brentwood, organized with the remaining fragments of the Brigade, and placed under the command of an officer of another regiment. This force was soon surrendered by that officer to the Confederate General Forrest without firing a shot, on the 25th. of March. The enlisted men were soon paroled and sent north. The commissioned officers to be exchanged on the 25th. of May. The Regiment was reorganized at Camp Chase, OH, and on the 8th. of June 1863, left Columbus, arriving at Nashville on the 11th. It took part in the advance on Tullahoma in June. On the 23rd. of July the Regiment was ordered to Murfreesboro, and went upon garrison duty inside the fortifications. Company D of the Nineteenth, commanded by Lieutenant F. Baldwin, numbering 50 men, having been stationed at a stockade on the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad, at Stone River, were attacked on the 5th. of October, by a force of Confederate cavalry and artillery under General Wheeler, but after a most gallant, however hopeless defence, having lost six in wounded, surrendered. The prisoners were immediately robbed of all possessions and promptly released. October 25, 1863 the Regiment, then in the 2nd. Brigade, 3rd. division, 20th. Corp, wa ordered to McMinnville, TN, where it was employed in the construction of fortifications. The Regiment garrisoned the post at McMinnville until April 21, 1864. It here built several forts, constructed a railroad bridge, repaired a locomotive that the Confederates had tried to destroy when they abandoned this place, put a saw mill in operation, which made lumber for blockhouses and other construction and other purposes. April 30th., the Regiment, which had been ordered to join its division, arrived at Lookout Valley, whence it moved on the 3rd. of May, with the army, then entering the Georgia Campaign. The Regiment made a demonstration on Buzzard's Roost, but was not engaged, then marched through Snake Creek Gap, to take part in the battle of Resaca, GA on May 15th. In ths action the Regiment participated in a charge on, with the capture of, a Confederate battery. It's loss in this charge was 14 killed and 66 wounded. On the 19th, the Regiment made another charge at Cassville, losing 1 killed, 4 wounded. They were engaged again at New Hope Church on the 25th., losing an additional 5 killed, 47 wounded. On the 10th. of June they were engaged yet another time at Golgotha Church, losing 4 killed, 9 wounded. Then again engaged at Culp's Farm, with another 13 wounded. Following up on the retreat of the Confederates from this position, along with Kenesaw Mountain, they crossed the Chattahoochie River to participate in the repulse of the Confederates at Peach Tree Creek on the 25th. of July, losing 4 killed, 33 wounded. During the Seige of Atlanta, the Regiment suffered 2 killed, 6 wounded. The Regiment then fell back with the rest of its Corp to Tanner's Ferry, then advanced on Atlanta, only to find it evacuated, there to remain on garrison until October 30, 1864. Then on the 15th. of November, the Nineteenth, in the 2nd. Brigade,3rd. Division, 20th. Corp advanced with General Sherman on the March to the Sea, when after a long and fatiguing march, destroying much property and provisions, reached Savannah on the 21st. of December. Heading north the Regiment crossed the Cape Fear River, then confronted the Confederates at Averysboro, participating in an heroic charge, carrying the works, capturing the artillery emplaced there, losing 4 killed, with 15 wounded. After the fall of Bentonville, and the surrender of General Johnston, the Regiment was marched, with its Corp, to Alexandria, VA, arriving there on the 18th. of May, to participate in the Grand Review in Washington on the 24th., thence to Jackson, MI on the 13th., where it was paid off and disbanded.
