MO census, Janice Maudlin Castleman.) was born June 28, 1823 in Wilson County, TN (Source: (1) 1850 Census, Wilson County TN, fam 643., (2) 1860 Census, Wilson County, TN, page 169.), and died Bet. 1863 - 1870 in Wilson County, TN (Source: 1870 Census. In the 1870 Census Caroline and son John are living with son James and his wife Lavina). He married CAROLINE RICHARDSON STEED October 25, 1846 in Williamson County, TN, daughter of ROBERT STEED. She was born July 10, 1827 in North Carolina (Source: (1) 1900 Census Wilson Cty. TN ed 149 sheet 1., (2) 1860 Census, Wilson County, TN, page 169.), and died August 14, 1911 in Wilson County, TN.

Death information from Confederate Civil War Records: Thomas R. Castleman, Pvt. B Company, 45 th TN
Infantry. Entered 9 Dec 1861 at Camp Trousdale by Lt. T.W. Hunt for 12 months. Present on roll 1 Mar-1 Sep 1862. AWOL 9 Dec 1862. Present on roll 22 Dec 1962. Letter of Discharge 7 Feb 1863; 40 years old, born in Wilson Co. TN, a carpenter, 5' 6" tall, dark skin, dark eyes, black hair.

In 1860 he was listed with his wife and three children in Wilson County, working as a carpenter.

Notes for CAROLINE RICHARDSON STEED:
Caroline's parentage is something of a mystery. Family lore indicates that her father's name was Robert. However, I haven't been able to find any Robert Steed listed in any of the early censuses. There was a Seth Steed who lived a few farms away from the Castleman family during Caroline's childhood. One Steed researcher told me that Seth had a sister named Susie who married a Richardson, and perhaps she was Caroline's mother. That was all he knew about the family.
