ELIZABETH2 MCGARRY (JOHN1)40 was born May 22, 1800 in Mullingar Parish, County Westmeath, Ireland41,42, and died January 12, 1886 in Drummond Twp., Lanark County, ON43. She married TOBIAS STAFFORD44 February 10, 1824 in St John the Baptist Church, Perth, ON45, son of TOBIAS STAFFORD and BRIDGET WATERS. He was born 46, and died November 17, 188247. Notes for ELIZABETH MCGARRY: Lived in Perth The following is information sent by Arlene Stafford who is working on her Family history: Elizabeth McGarry was the daughter of John McGarry and Mary Tone. We believe that Mary Tone likely died in County Westmeath Ireland before 1820 and that John McGarry brought his children to Perth, Ontario, Canada. The names of the children and John the dad, begin to appear in various documents such as land transactions, church records, marriage records around 1823. We don't know whether they came directly to Perth or if they landed first in Quebec or even a port in the US. One of Elizabeth's sisters Mary McGarry lists her home as being Ogdensburg, New York in her 1824 marriage to John Doran so this is why we're not sure whether they lived in the US first? My g-g-grandmother Elizabeth McGarry married Tobias Stafford on February 10, 1824 at St. John's Roman Catholic church in Perth, Ontario. One of the witnesses was her brother James McGarry who lived in Perth briefly before moving onto Niagara Falls. Elizabeth 'Betsy' (McGarry) Stafford Born: May 22, 1800 Mullingar Parish, County Westmeath, Ireland Died: Jan 12, 1886 Drummond Township, Ontario (died at home) Interred: St. Patrick's cemetery, Ferguson's Falls, Ont. Parents: John McGarry Mary (Tone) McGarry B - 1767 B - 1755 D - Dec. 29, 1841 D - 1809 Pioneer cemetery, Perth Ireland Elizabeth was the fourth of seven children born in Mullingar Parish, County Westmeath, Ireland to John McGarry and Mary Tone. No one can say that Betsy McGarry was not a hard working girl. Along with helping Tobias on the farm, preparing meals, keeping her house in order, with no heat, hydro or conveniences, Betsy McGarry managed to give birth to twelve children over the twenty-two year period between 1824 and 1846. As if that wasn't enough of an accomplishment Betsy was a wonderful mother and not only kept her children healthy in the harsh climate of Lanark County, but managed to instill in them confidence, ambition, and a fierce devotion to God. All of Elizabeth (McGarry) Stafford's twelve children reached adulthood; which was no small feat in the days of the early pioneer families in Upper Canada. We may surmise that Betsy was proud of her children and their accomplishments. Three of her children chose to serve the church. Julia and Margaret joined the convent at the House of Providence in Kingston, Ontario. Father Michael Stafford became the Parish Priest at St. Mary's Church in Lindsay, Ontario and was known across Canada as the 'Apostle of Temperance' in his fight against the consumption of alcohol. Betsy's sons Thomas and James chose to follow in their father's footsteps and farm the soil in Lanark County. Peter became a police officer in Niagara Falls. Henry owned a grocery store in Almonte, Ontario. Tobias Junior chose to live in Renfrew, Ontario where he became a successful insurance agent and town councillor, while John founded the S. & S. Boot Company and opened shoe stores; first in Almonte and later in Perth, Ontario. Elizabeth (McGarry) Stafford would live to see the birth of 48 grandchildren before her death in 1886. Siblings: It is believed that following the death of Elizabeth's mother Mary (Tone) McGarry, her father and the children emigrated from County Westmeath, Ireland. Julia McGarry settled in Montreal. Ann McGarry, James McGarry and Margaret McGarry settled in Niagara Falls in Welland County, Ontario, and their father John McGarry his son Peter McGarry, and daughters Elizabeth McGarry and Mary McGarry remained in Lanark County. What a comfort it must have been for Betsy to have her father John and brother Peter living a short wagon ride away on the 7th concession of Drummond township. Betsy's sister Mary was also nearby living in Perth with her husband John Doran. Betsy (McGarry) Stafford and Tobias Stafford had twelve children: James Stafford b - Nov. 24, 1824 Mary Stafford b - Aug. 7, 1826 Henry Stafford b - April 28, 1828 John Stafford b - Feb. 16, 1830 Michael Stafford b - March 1, 1832 Bridget Stafford b - Dec. 31, 1833 Tobias Stafford b - Aug. 20, 1835 Peter Stafford b - June 27, 1837 Elizabeth Stafford b - July 15, 1839 Julia Stafford b - Feb. 24, 1844 Margaret Stafford b - Feb. 22, 1845 Thomas Stafford b - Feb. 18, 1846 I descend from Elizabeth McGarry's youngest son Thomas Stafford - his youngest son Michael Vincent Stafford (1884-1949) then his youngest son Tobias Stafford (1918-1992) who was my father. -Arlene Stafford Notes for TOBIAS STAFFORD: Tobias was from Perth, Ont. "The grave marker of Tobias Stafford, Senior, has disappeared and none of the present generation are aware of its location. The dates of birth and death of Elizabeth McGarry Stafford are taken form her Grave Stone. Please note date of Birth is 1800." The McGarry Clan - Hazelton Marriage Notes for ELIZABETH MCGARRY and TOBIAS STAFFORD: Marriage Elizabeth, or 'Betsy' McGarry as she referred to herself in her marriage registration married Tobias Stafford son of Tobias Stafford and Bridget Waters on February 10th, 1824 at St. John's Church in Perth. Tobias had emigrated in 1819 from County Wexford, Ireland. The record of Betsy McGarry's marriage to Tobias Stafford written in St. John's parish register by Fr. John MacDonald on Feb. 10, 1824: "The tenth day of February, one thousand eight-hundred and twenty-four. Tobias Stafford of this mission in Drummond, son of Tobias Stafford and Bridget Waters on the one part and Betsy McGarry also of this mission in Drummond, daughter of John McGarry and Mary Tone on the other part, after three proclamations of banns, no impediment being known were joined in marriage by me the undersigned Priest and Curate of Perth in presence of the undersigned James McGarry and of Thomas McCaffrey and of several other witnesses." Transcription: Sixty-Ninth Wedding Anniversary. An observance of the sixty-ninth anniversary of their wedded life is the unique distinction befalling Archibald Thompson, of Crowland Township, aged 95, and his wife, Catharine Hall Thompson, 93 who were married Oct. 18, 1855 at the Little Falls View church by Rev. Father Musair; but one witness of the ceremony being still alive, Mrs. George Robinson of this city. Mr. Thompson was born on the farm on the Niagara River at the Whirlpool, acquired by his grandfath- er, a native of Scotland, by Crown patent in 1757, and where his father was born before him. The latter saw service in the War of 1812 and at- tained the rank of captain. Mrs. Thompson is a native of Perth, Ont. There were eight children born of the marriage, of whom three sons sur- vive; Alfred Thompson, Niagara Falls, South; C.A. Thompson, North Tona- wanda, N.Y.; and Dr. Daniel Thomp- son, who resides upon the family homestead; and a daughter, Mrs. Wm. Bracken, of Port Robinson with whom the aged couple make their home. There are eleven grandchildren and as many great grandchildren living. Mr. Thompson was active up to three years ago, when he became bedridden while his venerable wife is still alert and vigorous, and makes boast of still having every tooth in her head. She reads much and is fully conversant with the affairs of the day. All the articles appeared in the "Niagara Daily Record" newspaper. May 5th , 1910 Was Case of Suicide John Baldwin ended his life with carbolic acid - had been suspected of trying to poison Benj. Thompson with Paris Green There is some mystery behind the death of the farm hand John Bald- win, who was found by Mrs. Benjam- in Thompson, wife of the dead man's employer, at the Thompson farm near the Whirlpool. Mrs. Thompson said that Baldwin left the house ear- ly to go to the barn to milk the cows. His long absence prompted her to look for him when she discov- ered him dead or dying in the cow stable. It was apparent that the man had suicided as carbolic acid burns were seen on his lips. A small bottle was found that smelled of the deadly fluid. Detectives Kelly and McNamara, under instructions from Chief Mains investigated the case. It was found that Benjamin Thompson had been suffering from paris green poisoning after drinking from a pitcher containing cider on Saturday last. He is said to be recovering and cannot account for the poison in the jug nor for the fact that some of the stuff was found scattered over some meat. Dr. McGarry, who investigated the case as coroner, has decided that no inquest is necessary as it is a clear case of suicide. It is thought he had tried first to poison the family. The remains of the unfortunate man will be taken from Butler's und- taking rooms at 2 p.m. to-morrow for interment in the Presbyterian church cemetery, Stamford. Subject: May 6, 1910 Death of Ben Thompson HAD BEEN TAKEN ILL AFTER DRINKING PARIS GREEN WHICH IT IS SUPPOS- ED HAD BEEN PLACED IN A JAR BY BALD- WIN. To-day at noon word was received of the death of Benj. Thompson at the old homestead near the Whirl- pool. His death was the result, it is said, of having accidentally swal- lowed parish green that had been put in a pitcher of apple cider. It is suppose- ed the poison had been placed in the pitcher by John Baldwin. the man had worked for Thompson and who committed suicide on Wednesday last. Thompson had been in poor health for some time. Subject: May 9, 1910 INQUEST OPENED CORNER'S JURY VIEW THE RE- MAINS OF BENJAMIN THOMP- SON YESTERDAY AT BUTLER'S UNDERTAKING ROOMS AND ADJOURN TILL TO-NIGHT Coroner (Dr.) J. H. McGarry em- Panelled a jury at 4 p.m. yesterday at Butler's undertaking rooms, to investigate the circumstances sur- rounding the death of Benjamin Thompson, who died on Friday, May 6th, the cause of death being due it is thought to the effects of paris green which he had swallowed the previous Saturday from a pitcher said to contain cider mixed with the poison. The following were the jurymen sworn in: W.R. Price (foreman) W.E. Thomas. H. Webber. C.J. Baldry. C.V. Bradford. N. Fielding. D. Levey. J. Timbs. J. Aikens. H. Pattinson. H. Locke. R. Smith. After viewing the body, the jury were dismissed and instructed them to meet at the city hall at 8 o'clock to-night when evidence will be taken in the matter. Subject: May 10, 1910 ADJOURNED INQUEST CORONER'S JURY HOLDS SEC- OND SESSION OF ENQUIRY INTO DEATH OF BEN- JAMIN THOMP- SON. EVIDENCE OF PRINCIPAL WIT- NESSES TAKEN AND IN- QUEST ADJOUNED TILL MONDAY MAY 16TH. The second meeting of the jury em- panelled to inquire into the circum- stances surrounding the death of Ben jamin Thompson at his home in Stamford on Friday, May 6th, was held at the city hall last night, the coroner in the case being Dr. J. H. McGarry. The following are on the jury: W.R. Price (foreman) W.E. Thomas. H. Webber. C.J. Baldry. C.V. Bradford. N. Fielding. D. Levey. J. Timbs. J. Aikens. H. Pattinson. H. Locke. R. Smith. The evidence of Dr. E. T. Kellam who made a post-mortem examinat- tion of the body, was taken, he giving it as his opinion that the man came to his death as a result of Paris green poisoning, traces of which were found in the body. The evidence of Officers Kelly and Macnamara of the Ontario Police, Daniel Thompson, a brother of the dead man, and Mrs. Thompson was taken. The officers related the cir cumstances in which the body of Thompson was found and Mrs. Thompson told of the finding of Par- is green in the pitcher from which her husband had drank cider and al- so on the meat. Thompson had been intoxicated on Saturday and in the evening was taken ill but it was not until Monday a doctor was cal- led. Daniel Thompson did not think the hired man, John Baldwin, who is supposed to have committed suicide Wednesday morning, had any hand in the death of his brother. He spoke of another man who had work- ed for his brother and had made a threat after being discharged. It developed that Thompson and Baldwin had quarrelled frequently, but that when Thompson became ill on Saturday he had been waited up- on by Baldwin. The inquest was adjouned until Monday, May 16th. when the evid- Ence of Dr. Tremble of Queenston, who attended Thompson, will be taken. Subject: May 17, 1910 An Open Verdict Coroner's Jury in the Thompson Inquest find that Poison Was Administered by Unknown Person Mystery of Ben. Thompson's Death Not Yet Explained The inquest over the death of Ben- Jamin Thompson, which occurred un- der suspicious circumstances at the old Thompson homestead on Friday, May 6th. was resumed at the city hall last evening before Dr. J. H. McGarry, the coroner in the case. The following were on the jury - W.R. Price (foreman) W.E. Thomas. H. Webber. C.J. Baldry. C.V. Bradford. N. Fielding. D. Levey. J. Timbs. J. Aikens. H. Pattinson. H. Locke. R. Smith. Evidence was heard from Dr. Trem- ble of Queenston who attended Thompson in his last illness and who stated that in his belief the man had died from arsenic poisoning - ar- senic being the active principle of Paris green. It will be recalled that Thompson died three days after the death of John Baldwin, a hired man on the place, who died presumably from car- bolic acid poisoning and supposedly by his own hand. Mrs. William Bracken, sister of Ben. Thompson, testified that her brother had been ill in a similar manner two weeks previous to his death. She believed an attempt was made on his life then. She knew little of the facts of the first instance. She told of finding Paris green sediments in the cider pitcher from which Thompson had drunk on Saturday, April 13. Thompson told the witness that his wife had not gone near him when he was first taken ill. Miss Loretta Thompson, a niece of the dead man, also gave evidence, which would seem to implicate Bald- win. The jury spent about three-quart ers of an hour in deliberation and then returned the verdict that Ben- jamin Thompson came to his death from arsenic poisoning administered by some person or persons unknown. Chief Mains and the men of the On- tario Police will investigate still fur- ther in the case. Here's a transcription of the newspaper article written by Sherman Zavitz, the Niagara historian who has a weekly column in the Niagara Falls, Ontario newspaper - "The Review". This article appeared on page A6, Saturday August 21, 1999...........sent by Mark McGarry _____________________________________ "Puzzling killings cativated Niagara" "It was a shocking and puzzling double tragedy that the citizens of Niagara Falls 89 years ago would not soon forget. At noon on Wednesday, May 4, 1910, word was received at police headquarters here that John Baldwin, who worked for Ben Thompson on his large farm at the Whirlpool, had suddenly died under very mysterious circumstances. Chief Mains immediately sent two detectives to the scene. On reaching the old and prosperous farm, they were greeted by Ben's young wife, Ida. She told them that Baldwin had gone out to milk the cows early that morning. After he was gone an unusually long time, she went to investigate and found him dead in a cow stall. When the detectives examined the body, they found carbolic acid burns on the dead man's lips. An empty bottle of the deadly and caustic substance was found nearby. A further investigation inside the Thompson home turned up quantities of Parish green (a poisonous compound sometimes used as an insecticide) in several cups and on some meat. Ben Thompson himself, it was discovered, had been suffering from Parish green poisoning since the previous Saturday after drinking a cup of cider taken from a pitcher later found to contain particles of the deadly substance. It appeared that Baldwin had first tried to poison the family and had then taken his own life. His death was ruled a suicide. Two days after Baldwin's death, Ben Thompson died. Niagara Falls coroner Dr. James H. McGarry ordered an inquest. Held at city hall, a number of people were summoned before the 12-man jury to give evidence. Dr. E.T. Kellam, who made the post-mortem examination of Thompson's body, testified that death was due to Parish green poisoning. Ida Thompson explained that her husband had a cup of cider every afternoon after his work in the fields was done, but on that fateful Saturday he became violently ill after taking his usual drink. On examining the cider pitcher, she found traces of Paris green in it. However, it was not until the following Monday that she summoned Dr. Tremble from Queenston. He testified that he believed arsenic poisoning was the cause of the 54-year-old farmer's death - arsenic being one of the ingredients in Parish green. Thompson's sister, Mrs. William Bracken, indicated that she was sure a previous attempt had been made on her brother's life several weeks before when he was sick with the same symptoms he had shown at the time of his death. Mrs. Bracken told the jury: "His wife had not gone near him when he was first taken ill." She also testified how Ben had told her that he didn't see how John could be responsible for poisoning him, since his employee had left a better job and "begged to be hired by me." Thompson's brother, Daniel, felt that a man who had worked for Ben earlier and who had threatened him when dismissed was possibly responsible. Loretta Thompson, Ben's niece, had come to see him several days before his death. She told how Baldwin and her uncle frequently quarreled but when Ben became ill, his employee tried to care for him. This was in contrast to his wife, who had ignored him even though he was "vomiting his heart out". Loretta then gave the most startling evidence, when she suggested that Baldwin had been in love with his employer's wife. Ben had told her, she testified, that he wondered if "that fool (Baldwin) thought I would let him run the place and marry Ida if he got rid of me." (This was the opposite of what he had told his sister.) The jury gave careful consideration to the possibility that John had tried to murder Ben so he could have Ida and the farm, but then took his own life when he thought the plan had failed. In the end, however, the verdict was that "Benjamin Thompson came to his death from arsenic poisoning administered by some person or persons unknown." Despite further investigation, no new evidence was ever uncovered. Apparently, Ida was never officially considered as a suspect even when, shortly after the inquest, she vanished, abandoning her two small sons, who ended up being raised by an uncle in North Tonawanda, N.Y. The Thompson family never heard anything more about her until 1947, when they were notified of her death in Virginia. Ben Thompson lies buried in the Stamford Presbyterian Church Cemetery on St. Paul Avenue. Just who was responsible for his terrible death remains one of Niagara's great unsolved mysteries. Sherman Zavitz is the Official Historian for the City of Niagara Falls and is the Historian for the Niagara Parks commission." _____________________________________ Notes for IDA WINGER: "The Thompson family never heard anything more about her until 1947, when they were notified of her death in Virginia." Several nieces and nephews also survive. Mrs. Bracken is resting at the Morse and Son Chapel, Main Street until Saturday, May 30 at 9:30 a.m. when the cortege will proceed to Our Lady of Scapular Church for Requiem High Mass at 10 a.m. Interment in Fairview Cemetery. ------------- FUNERAL Mrs. Margaret Bracken Funeral services for the late Mrs. Margaret Bracken were held from the Morse and Son chapel at 9:30 this morning proceeding to Our Lady of the Scapular Church for requiem high mass at ten o'clock. The mass was con- ducted by Rev J. A. Sweeney. Interment was made in Fair- view cemetery and the bearers were Edgar, Joe, Wayne and Archie Thompson and William and Eugene Bracken. The rosary was recited in the chapel at 8:30 last night. Many mass cards were received. The following was written about Margaret Bracken by Ruth Cleaves Hazleton, 2562 Portage Road, 1861-1959 Niagara Falls, Ont. When Mrs. Bracken lived at Port Robinson on the bank of the river, a delightful spot indeed, her small cottage was a pleasure to visit. She was a wit, a delightfully cheerful person, one who always saw a silver lining and one who was first with offers of help for those in any kind of need. I remember her gaiety so well. She would often sit down at the piano and play some of the old songs and sometimes she would play an Irish jig, and then getting up, would lift her skirts and dance a few steps to show us how. She was full of stories of the old days and the people she knew as a child: and often we were intrigued with her stories of the street car stop at "The Hole in the Fence" which led across fields to her father's place in Stamford, where Mr. Thompson had, in those years, wonderful vine- yards of lucious grapes. "How did I come to know her? That is of small importance in so far as I am concerned but it concerns an older story that many old-timers may remember from 'trice-told tales,' as it were" Back in County Westmeath in Ireland a certain John McGarry (1750-1810) married Mary Tone (1755-1818) - she was a descendant of the great Irish patriot Wolfe Tone. They lived and died in Ireland but about the 1820s their children came to Canada. These children were Peter McGarry who settled in Perth, Ontario, James McGarry (1796-1882) who married first Lydia Shuart Skinner, and on her death married Mary Brennan, James and Lydia had five children - of these was one Dr. James McGarry (1835-1903) who was a surgeon and served in the U.S. Civil War and afterwards practiced here at the Falls for many years. When the good doctor married he had three children, and his son Dr. James McGarry (1871-1948) was the father of the present four doctors of that name at the McGarry Clinic - Dr. George McGarry, Dr. Howard McGarry, Dr. James McGarry and Dr. John McGarry. But how does lively Mrs. Bracken - for so we thought of her - enter into this picture? Let's go on with the story. Besides Peter and James - John and Mary Tone had a daughter, Ann McGarry. Ann married twice. By her first marriage to Mr. Flannagan [sic] had three children - Mary, who married Charles Bowen, Catherine who married Archibald Thompson of Stamford, and Cris [sic] who married Annie Carr. Catherine Flannagan Thompson had eight children - one of whom was our Mrs. Bracken. The other children of John McGarry and Mary Tone McGarry were Elizabeth who married Tobias Stafford of Perth, Ontario, Mary who married John Doran, of Perth, Julia who married twice and Margaret who married Denis Duffy after her first husband Colin Skinner died. [page 2] As Mrs. Bracken used to tell the story it went something like this .... from the children of John and Mary Tone McGarry who all came out from Ireland in 1820 ... in reference to the Niagara Peninsula, I am almost quoting Mrs. Bracken's own words: "From James (1796-1882) you get all the McGarry doctors down to today; you get his daughter Mary (1882-1922) who married John Malone (their daughter married George Hazelton of Guelph, Ontario). From Ann (1798-1875) you get her daughter Mary, who was Mrs. Bowen - and her daughter Julia married Daniel Mahoney and from there you get the Mahoney doctors on down; Julia's sister, Theresa, married Feliz Poirer and her son is Dr. Poirer! Healing ran in their blood! You couldn't oust it. Many people will remember Mrs. Bracken for her kindliness, her love of life, her joy in the simple and true things; everyone who came to her house was welcome, and if she was right and the art of healing ran like a vein of gold down from the small home in County Westmeath, Ireland in 1820 on into the present day, among descendants- we might rightfully say that Margaret Thompson Bracken had something of that art too, in her sense of helpfulness and her love for all whom she met! We shall miss her, all who knew her.
