Family tradition holds that Ralph would take part in contests where two men were bound together by rope at the wrist and they would fight each other until a winner was declared. This was no holds barred style of fighting, biting, kicking etc all ok. It seems that "Devil Rafe" was very good at this and that it got to the point that no one would go up against him.
