My Hamrick/Evans Roots-West Virginia RootboundUpdated January 18, 2004 | SherriAnderson [email protected] |
My family roots are mainly in the beautiful mountains of West Virginia, but I have been able to find many family members in other states. In West Virginia, most of my family has been centered in the Webster and Braxton County areas. My father was a Hamrick, decended from Patrick Hamrick, who was the earliest known Hamrick to settle the area. Earlier ancestors of Patrick have been difficult to trace, although there is some reference to the family on board a ship in the early 1600's, I believe. There are several variations of the name, which makes for a little confsion. My father's mother was a Cool, decended from Walter Cool, the first Sheriff of Webster County. Much research has been done on this family, especially o verify the father of Walter, which is where most information ends. My mother was an Evans, a decendent of David Evans who came from Lancaster County,PA to Braxton County and married Christiana Petro in the early 1800's. I belive David's father was John, but I have not been able to verify that, as yet. My mother's mother was a Lough, who was one of the early settlers of this area. Her family is connected to the Van Meter's, other early settlers of the area and the the Cherokee Indians of the area. | |
