name pronounced "Life" according to his nephew Pete Ersland.

Leif's son John says " I remember my father recalling how he finally persuaded his parents [Peder & Sophie] to speak English rather than Norwegian now that they were in America."

In 1954, Iris von Tettenborn (later Nast) visited Leif Eritsland and his family and his widowed mother in Madison Wisconsin, along with Lars Eritsland's son Oscar and wife Mildred, daughter Esther & son-in-law Harry Macheroux, and grandson Larry Macheroux. She still remembers that visit and has a Christmas card received that Christmas from "your new-found relatives Leif, Bea, John and Edith."...

Peder Ersland's obituary in 1945 refers to "Corp. Lief Ersland, in service for the United States Army stationed in Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri."

her son John, in an email message to Pete Ersland March 20, 2002, says "My mother was the repository of the Ersland and Eritsland family relationships even though it wasn't her family. Sure wish that she was still around to answer so many questions that I was too stupid to ask when I had the chance."

[note from Iris Nast, about meeting her at her mother's in Madison in 1954]: " I visited with them later in their home in one of the Quad cities." Violet's daughter Carol writes [email March 2002] that both she and her sister Gail were there when Iris visited in Madison.

"Art and his wife Berniece lived with grandpa and grandma Ersland for a few years before they left Madison for Seattle, Washington to work for Boeing. Art died at such an early age of a heart attack shortly after he had visited his relatives in the Madison area. At that time, we lived in a nice house on a lake outside of Madison. Cambridge, which is about twenty miles east of Madison, is near the heart of the initial destination of the Norwegian immigration....Art had dived off of our pier and a week later in Renton, Washington, he was dead.
